“Home sweet home!"
I say this every time
I come home from
school. I can relax here
and do magic tricks, of
course. This is my
room. I share it with my
sister April. I love her,
but she is not very tidy, and our mum gets upset when
she sees the mess in our room.
This is my bed. I often read books in it. These books
on my bed are about magic tricks. My new magic trick
is really interesting: a magic broom that can walk and
f i l clean the room! Why?
Look at that bed over
there. That bed is
April's. She is not very
tidy, but this is not a big
problem for her! She
can sleep with those
socks on the bed and
those shoes under the
bed! "So what", she says, "socks must sleep, too.”
Mum would like to have a clean house but this is
difficult because our house is very big. When she
comes into our room, she always says, "This room is a
mess! Look at those shoes there! Pick up those socks,
April! Please."
I know how my magic trick can help April and mum. I
can stay in my bed and give instructions to my magic
broom, "Moppety mop, broornety broom,
1,2,3 — clean this room!" The magic broom
cleans and tidies up children's rooms.
Would you like to have one?

ENGLISH HOMES
Some English families live in flats, but lots of people
have got their own1 houses. There are two floors in a
traditional English house.
Two or three bedrooms and a bathroom are upstairs.

The living-room is usually a favourite place in the house.
There is always a sofa, some chairs and armchairs in it.
There is often a carpet on the floor. It makes the room

in the city.
GETTING AROUND THE CITY
Yesterday my cousin and I went for a walk in town. We
walked along the streets to the square in the centre of
the town.
On one side of this square we saw a new post office, a
tall modern building. Here we stopped because the lights
were red. When the lights changed to green we crossed
the square.
On the other side of the square, opposite the post-
office, we saw the theatre, a beautiful white building.
There was a large hotel near the theatre.
We walked on. Soon we came to a street with trees
and flowers in the middle. In this street my cousin and I
stopped at many
shops to look at the
shop windows. On one
side of this street there
were a large cinema
and a new cafe. On
the other side we saw
the library. At the end
of the street there was
the town hospital.

Hi, Olenka!
How are you? I hope, you are doing well. We have
celebrated Valentine's Day and now I can't wait1 to
celebrate Easter. I love Easter best of all holidays. It's good
that this Christian2holiday is in spring, the days are longer.

Friday’1. On this day
many people eat fish.
People eat special bread rolls called ‘Hot Cross Buns’.
There is a white cross on a hot cross bun. On Saturday,
the second day, my family and I decorate the eggs.
On Easter Sunday, the third day, Mum hides the eggs
somewhere in the garden. My brother and I usually find
them very quickly and put these eggs in the basket.
Then we all go to church and celebrate the Jesus’ rising
from the dead2. We wear nice clothes to church. In
church we sing Easter songs called hymns3. All people
look happy. Easter Sunday is an important day for
children. They get chocolate Easter eggs. After church
the families go home and have a big meal of roast lamb.
Easter Monday is a public4 holiday, and schools and
companies are closed. Some people send Easter cards.
The Easter decorations are everywhere, and we can see
pictures of baby rabbits, lambs, chicks, white lilies and

know why? I'll tell you. There are 365 days in a year.
One day is your birthday, and you receive birthday
presents on this day. But there are three hundred sixty-

Hi, Ann!
How are you doing?
I hope the things are
good with you.
As for me, I'm
looking forward to
school holidays. My
family is fond of travelling1, and we are planning to visit
some interesting places on these holidays.
Travelling is fun, as you can see and learn a lot of
new things. We have travelled by different means
of transport: by ship, by train, by plane, by coach bus.
But this year we want to go somewhere2 by car.
It's nice, because you don't need to buy a ticket when
you travel by car, and you can stop wherever3you want.
What about you? Does your family like travelling?
Where are you going this year?
Best wishes,
Taras.

family is going to travel by car this year and they can
stop wherever they want.
Bill: That's good, but I love the sea, and travelling by ship
is for me.
Jim: Don't argue3, friends. All means of transport are
good, and you can choose any of them. For example,
my cousin is keen on cycling. His friends and he
always travel by bike. They say, it's fantastic.

Hi, Olenka,

two years. They live far from us, in Wales, and they
miss us very much.
Yesterday my dad, mum and I met them at the railway

They wanted to know the information of their trains.
When my grandparents came, we helped them with

We're going to a really nice place to have a cup of tea.
When we see their flag in the air,
Then we know we're near.
Oh boy, I can't wait to get there.
The people are so very nice and full of cheer,
Oh boy, I can't wait to meet them.
(Chorus):
We will have so much fun
When we are in London:
Double deckers and the Queen
When we're in London,
Taxi cabs and Oxford Street
When we're in London.
The Buckingham Palace is great, it's worth the visit.
Oh boy, it sure is amazing1.
And the Tower of London is big, you can't miss it,
Oh boy, it's bigger than an elephant.
(Chorus)
The phone booths2 and the royal guard3
When we're in London.
A cup of tea with our friends
When we are in London.

GOING SHOPPING
I like to help my family. And I often go shopping with
my mum and dad. We like doing shopping at our new
shopping centre. There is a big department store and
a supermarket there. The department store has got three
floors. There are many departments in it: clothes, shoes,
sports goods, toys, books, cameras, TVs, videos and
many others.
As for me, I like toys department best of all. Dad
prefers sports goods and cameras, and mum is fond of
buying clothes.
In the women's clothing department we can find
dresses, blouses, skirts, coats, beautiful decorations
for women.
In the men's clothing department men can choose
a suit1 or an overcoat, trousers, a sweater, a shirt or a tie.
Mum says that clothes are important, but I don't think
so, they should only be clean and comfortable. So,
I don't like shopping for clothes very much, because
I hate trying them on2. It takes too much time.

destroy [dist'roi] opposite ‘to build’. I built a sandcastle
on the beach, but the storm destroyed it. I was sad.
transfer [tr3ns'f3:] — to take and send. Ships, trains
and planes transfer things to other places. Banks
transfer money to the people in other cities,
rise [raiz] — to go high. The sun rises in the East. I like
to rise up the hill,
disappear Ldisg'pig] — to hide. A minute ago I saw a fox
in the forest. But then she disappeared, and I didn’t
see it any more,
pollute [pg'kt] — to make something dirty. The air is polluted,
I can't breathe. The river is polluted, I can't swim,
m arine [m9'ri:n] — Dolphins are marine animals: they
live in the sea. I like to read about marine life.

You know what! Yesterday our Science teacher took

us to the Planet Earth Museum. It was great! I learnt
a lot of interesting facts about the world we live in.
First we went to the Forests Zone. Forests are
home to over half the world's animals and plants.
Trees clean the air and produce oxygen1 for us
to breathe2. But every day we throw away hundreds
of trees in paper and we destroy more than 36 football
fields of forests.
Then we visited the Oceans Zone. I should say that
the oceans are home to millions of marine animals.
They absorb3 the sun’s heat, transfer it to the
atmosphere and move it around the world.
The Arctic Zone was the most interesting for me.

1oxygen [’D k s id 3 3 n ] — KuceH b 3to absorb [ab'zDib] —

2to breathe [bri:ô] — flMxaTH B6npaTM b ce6e
At the opposite ends of the world, the Arctic
and Antarctic are freezing cold lands. It is so Arctic Zone
cold there that the sea is covered in ice. But
the fuel1we use for energy makes the climate
warmer. The ice melts and the sea rises. The Rivers Zone
land disappears.
After that we went to the Rivers Zone. Rivers collect
rainwater and carry it to the ocean. Along the way plants
absorb and clean the water, so it is safe for us to drink.
But farms and factories2 pollute the rivers. It’s so sad.
Nature gives us a lot. When we feel tired, it opens
its home: forests, seas and rivers so we can rest there.
I think, we must be thankful to the Earth, to our nature.
We must do something to protect it. Do you agree, Taras?
Say hello to your family.
Bye,
Ann

Jane: Hi, Jim! Thank you
for the invitation, but
I’m watching a very
interesting film.
Jim: What film?
Jane: It’s about animals. I love animals. You can come
and watch the film with me.
Jim: OK. We’re on our way.
Jane: Oh, boys, you’ve missed some
facts about a koala.
Jim and Bill: Ouch! Can you tell us
about this animal?
Jane: Of course, I can. A koala looks
like a little bear. It lives in the forests koala [kao'cda]
of Australia1. It never drinks water.
It gets all the water from leaves it eats.
Bill: Wow! Can it swim?
Jane: Yes, it can. And it can climb trees, too. It has got
special claws2 for climbing.
Jim: Fantastic!
Jane: What is more, a koala has got a pouch3. It carries
the baby in the pouch.
Jim: Like a kangaroo...
Jane: Oh, yes! But you can see a koala only at night
because it sleeps during the day.
Bill: I want to see a koala. Let’s go to Australia!
Jim and Jane: Ha-ha-ha! Let’s go!

Attractive [at'raektiv] — npnBa6nnBHM
be thankful to the nature for all these wonders.
We must take care of the Earth, keep it clean. We should
not destroy the nature, we should not pollute the air and water.
We should save water in the house. We shouldn’t leave all
the lights on at home. We shouldn’t use electricity without
need because the heat rises in nature and causes1 global
warming2. Lots of animals and plants die because of it3.
We shouldn’t kill animals!
We should not cut trees!
We should try to maintain4the natural shape of the Earth!
