Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Without students, schools, colleges and universities have no worth. According to

Merriam-Webster Dictionary, students are the people who attend a schools, college or

university, A person who studies something. Student is heart of a school. Students are

the most important asset of school because students are the foundation of our future

and students are the one who give life to schools, colleges or universities.

Academic is relating to schools and education. Courses of study taken at a school

or college. It is not involving or relating to anything real or practical. Learning is defined

as the acquisition of knowledge or skills through experience, study, or being taught

(Merriam-Webster). Academic performance is one factor that measure one's

intelligence. It's your performance in studies, classroom, or in academic, and also you

intelligence on how you excel in things and do them. Academic performance can be

measure through test scores or examinations in different subjects. There's a major issue

among students, parents, teachers and in administration in terms of academic

performance. Good study habits, Teachers, useful books and also the help of parents,

are the key for better academic performance.

The researcher observes that the academic performance of the students are

different or not the same. That's why, the researcher want to know the factors that

1|Page
influence the students' academic performance.

The study may help the students to know what are the factors that influence

their academic performance in school. Not just to know the factors, but also to help

them to know how the factors affect their academic performance.

This research is focuses on the senior high school students of Saint Rose Catholic

School Inc.. Senior high school students are the respondents and focuses on the factors

affecting academic performance of the students in the S.Y. 2016-2017.

Objectives of the study

To determine what are the factors that influence the academic performance of the SHS

students in SRCS.

To know or examine how the factors influence students academic performance.

Statement of the problem

This study attempts to determine the factor that influence on students academic

performance and how it influence, specifically among the Grade 11 students of Saint

Rose Catholic School, Inc. in the S.Y. 2016-2017.

The study aims to answer the following questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of the SHS student-respondent in terms of

the following:

1.1. Age:

2|Page
1.2. Gender:

1.3. Monthly family income:

1.4. Parental presence:

2. What is the academic performance of the student-respondents?

3. What are the factors influence the academic performance of SHS students?

4. How do this factors influence on the academic performance of SHS students?

Significance of the study

This study may focus to present the benefits for the senior high school students

of SRCS, parents, teachers, and the administration.

To the senior high school students of SRCS. They may know the factors that

influence their academic performance therefore, they can avoid the factors that

influence their academic performance that will be presented after the study, so they can

have a better academic performance. The study may be able to have clearer

understanding on the factors affecting their academic performance in school. To the

parents of the students. They can give their child or children some help or guidance or

advice, so maybe next time, their child or children know what to do or they can improve

their academic performance. To teachers of the students. They can help their students

to have a better performance in terms of academic. It can help teachers to know the

reason behind why their students have different academic performance. To the

3|Page
administration of the school. They can become aware so they will find ways for students

to have a better academic performance. If their students have great or good academic

performance they can have a lot of achievers.

Scope and Delimitation

The study only focuses on the factors that influence the academic performance

of grade 11 students of SRCS. The researcher may select one hundred (150)students

coming from the different strands as a respondent. Thirty (60) students may come from

the students of STEM (Science and Technology Engineering and Mathematics), twenty

(40) students in ABM (Accountancy and Business Management) and fifteen (25)

students in both HUMSS (Humanities and Social Sciences) and TVL (Technical Vocational

Livelihood) strand.

LITERATURE REVIEW

This chapter deals with related literature and studies conducted here and

abroad which have bearing on the present study.

Related Study

In the study of Girma Berhanu in 2011 that was conducted in metropolitan city

of Pakistan to examine the different factors influencing the academic performance of

secondary school students. He use grade 10 students 300 male and 300 female as the

respondents for his study. He use questionnaire in his survey in gathering information

about the different factors that influence the academic performance of the students. He

used Standard t-test and ANOVA to investigate the influence of different factors on

students' academic performance. The results of the study revealed that socioeconomic

status (SES) and parents’ education have a significant effect on students’ overall

academic achievement as well as achievement in the subjects of Mathematics and

English. The high and average socioeconomic level affects the performance more than

the lower level. Parents’ education means more than their occupation in relation to

their children’s academic performance at school. In the study it found that girls perform

better than the male students. http://www.gu.se/english/research/publication?

According to Journal of Educational Research that the students' academic

performance may be influenced by various external factors other than their personal

5|Page
characteristics. Their study is being conducted to dig out the factors which are

important for the effective learning of students and enhance the quality of education.

They used questionnaire for data collection and its reliability. In this study the

punctuality of teachers and graduation marks of the students are found to be significant

by both techniques and it shows that these two indicators play an important role in

enhancing the academic performance of students' performance.

In the study of Sunshine B. Alos, Lawrence C. Caranto, and Juan Jose T. David

they determined the factors affecting the academic performance of fourth year student

nurses. They are found that the eating and sleeping habit in personal condition has a

high impact to students' academic performance. In school-related aspects the time

schedule, school programs, classrooms, library and internet access are rates as high

impact. Among the teacher-related-factors there's only 1 factor that has very high

impact to students which is the mastery of the teacher to the subject matter. Feeling

sleeping in class was rated to be of highest impact. Based on their study, it was

concluded that several factors pose a high impact on the academic performance of

student nurses, with teacher-related factors topping the list. Among the other factors,

study habits and school-related factors fall behind the teacher-related factors. In spite

of what has just been said, both categories are still deemed to be highly impact.

Conversely, personal conditions and home-related factors pose little effect on student

nurses’ academic performance.

In February 17,2016 in Blog, International, there are Internal and external factors

that affects the academic performance of students. In fact, there probably are as many

factors as there are struggling students. There are Student-related factors, there are

some reasons for poor performance of the students, Bullying. The evolution of

technology and social media communication has, in some countries if not most, made it

easier than ever for young people to be exposed to environments that can make

bullying unbearable and even more threatening than ever before. Self-motivation,

learning disability is student-centered and may create an obstacle to reaching certain

academic standards. Motivation also can play a factor in poor performance. A student

may be fully capable of earning high grades but might simply not care enough about

education to exert the effort. Issues of motivation could be placed upon the parents or

even the school, but sometimes a child simply does not enjoy learning. School-related

factors, In schools that can’t afford more teachers or building expansions, classes

sometimes become overcrowded to the point that children learn under trees and

teachers have to spend more time on ‘classroom’ management than on teaching, which

can result in lower student performance. , Family-related factors, family-related factors

can play a critical role in a student’s academic performance. In areas most working

parents are too busy to care about their children’s performance, causing children to lose

their academic focus. Furthermore, living in poverty also can distract a child from

academics.

According to Wilder research, there are studies have demonstrated that

nutrition affects students’ thinking skills, behavior, and health, all factors that impact

academic performance. Research suggests that diets high in trans and saturated fats can

negatively impact learning and memory, nutritional deficiencies early in life can affect

the cognitive development of school-aged children, and access to nutrition improves

students’ cognition, concentration, and energy levels. https://www.wilder.org/Wilder-

The researcher's study are related to the studies because the studies are about

the factors that influence academic performance of the students and on how this

factors influence the academic performance of the students which is the same to this

study. The things on the studies that are not related to the researcher study is, this

study will be conducted in the Saint Rose Catholic School and the senior high school

students of Saint Rose Catholic School will serve as a respondent to this study.

METHODOLOGY

This chapter contains the well-organized account of the research design, type of

research, methods of gathering data and the procedure in gathering data.

Research Design

This Study will use descriptive research design to achieve the results that the

researcher required. Descriptive research because this study aims to provide

information and data about the factors that influence the academic performance of the

students. The choice of this design is to make sure that the study will not result to

anything insignificant to the study.

Type of Research

This study will use qualitative research that can provide rich information.

Qualitative research is primarily exploratory research, it is used to gain an

understanding of underlying reasons, opinions, and motivations, it provide insights to a

problem or helps to develop ideas (snapsurveys.com)

Methods of Gathering Data

The type of tools in collecting data that researcher to use in research has a great

influence on the quality of information that will gathered from the respondents. In view

of that, in this study, the researcher will use the two data collection tools , the

9|Page
questionnaire and personal interview survey to explore or get some data that is relevant

to the study.

Procedure

First, the researcher will gather information about the study so that, the researcher will

have the enough information about the research.

Second, the researcher will create questionnaires that will be presented to the

respondents.

Third, the researcher will observe on how he/ she will choose respondents. The

researcher will have a conversation with the respondents regarding with the study that

will be conducted.

Fourth, after gathering the data that can be use on the study, make a schedule to set

the day that may be going to be the schedule in distributing the questionnaires to the

respondents.

Fifth, the questionnaires will be distributed and ready to be answered by the

respondent. The answers will serve as the data that will help the study to be finish.
