FSB 465-001, Bull Gear Mounting Fastener Torque Procedure

(August 2010)

To prevent the bull gear mounting screws from loosening in service on MACK 95/96, 150/151 & 200 Series Dual
Reduction Carriers, the following torque procedures MUST be used whenever the carrier is reassembled or after any
service which involves removal and disassembly of the differential assembly. These procedures are different from the
procedures outlined in the MACK Dual Reduction Tandem Carrier 95/96 Series service manual (13-103), Mack
CRD150/151 Series Dual-Reduction Tandem Carrier (PV776-88934877), and the CRD200 Series Carrier Overhaul
manual (13-101). It is recommended that this bulletin be copied and inserted into each of these service manuals.

Note: This bulletin does not apply to Mack Trucks Australia.

Note: Refer to the table on page 4. for the specific torque procedure and specification for the models listed.

Procedure

You must read and understand the precautions and guidelines in Service Information Group 40, “General Safety
Practices” before performing this procedure. If you are not properly trained and certified in this procedure, ask your
supervisor for training before you perform it.

Revised Bull Gear Mounting Fastener Torque Procedure

1. Carefully inspect the splines on the bull gear and the differential side casing. Remove any burrs that are seen.
Replace any component with damaged splines.
2. Assemble the differential per the instructions outlined in the appropriate service manual.
3. Install four bull gear mounting screws (washers and locknuts if used) into four diametrically opposed mounting
holes in the assembly. Using the criss-cross pattern shown in the figure below, hand-tighten the four fasteners.
The mounting screws and locknuts are one-time use fasteners only. The washers can be reused.

Caution
DO NOT reuse the existing fasteners. If existing fasteners are reused, they may loosen and cause
damage to the bull gear and carrier.

4. Secure the differential assembly in a vise, and then install the remaining new bull gear mounting screws
(washers and locknuts if used) and hand tighten. The washers can be reused.

Caution
Do not use hard metal jaw caps on the vise jaws. The use of hard metal jaw caps will create burrs,
causing damage to the bull gear.

5. Use an accurately calibrated torque wrench to tighten all the fasteners to specification. See illustration below for
torque sequence procedure.

Note: Refer to the table on page 4. for the specific torque procedure and specification for the models listed.

6. Apply torque to the nut side of the fastener as shown in table.

Note: For 95/96 carriers only: While holding the head of the screw with a hand wrench or a socket and breaker
bar apply torque to the nut and not the screw. For 150/151 & 200 series carriers apply torque to the screw.

7. Using the same sequence as shown in step 5, advance the fasteners according to the number of degrees of
rotation specified in the table below.
8. For 200 series carriers torque the jam nuts to the specification in the table.
