Reflection 4 | Tools and Equipment Used in Dessert Making

The final topic that I was able to successfully demonstrate was the tools and equipment in dessert
making. This has to be my personal favorite out of all the topics I had. I love baking and
preparing desserts in family occasions. I grew up learning that skills and this is just the perfect
time for me to showcase what I know, and hopefully, along the way, I will learn new things.
Indeed, in the process of revisiting the tolls and equipment in dessert making, I was enlightened
with so many things.
When it comes to dessert making, and in whatever dessert you opt to make, one’s tools can lead
to either satisfying success or frustrating failure. There are tons of products available to help with
tackling different baking and dessert making tasks – from mixing and measuring up through
finishing and decorating.
Here are some of the tools that I find handy and relevant in the process;
Measuring cups and spoons help you in making great proportions in dessert making. Glass cups
are great for reading liquid amounts, and metal spoons are ideal for scooping and leveling dry
ingredients.
Digital scales are the most accurate way to measure. The amount of flour in one cup can actually
vary by up to 30 percent depending on whether or not it’s been sifted.
A pastry blender or referred to as a pastry cutter helps you cut fat into dry ingredients to create
flaky biscuits, scones, and pie crusts. If you don’t want to do the manual labor, the same result
can also be achieved with a food processor.
Silicone spatulas are heat resistant, don’t stain or even absorb flavors. They are essential for
gently mixing things such as cake batters, meringues or whipped cream.
Rolling pins are essential tools for any baked good you can imagine. From puff pastry, pie
dough, cutout cookies, and fondant for cake decorating. This is definitely a must have for any
home baker.
Bench or dough scrapers are vital when it comes to any stuck-on mess on your counter. This can
also be used for portioning dough.
Silicone baking mats are a great alternative to parchment paper, since they are reusable. This is a
necessity for baking tuile cookies.
These are just some of the many tools that I enjoyed learning for this particular demonstration. I
really dream of owning these, for they really sky rocket my passion in baking and dessert
making. Overall, my demonstration went well and I will always be grateful.
