For any node expansion, one of the following three scenarios will
apply:

 Follow this procedure to add the new node to the existing cluster.

v4.7.527, v4.7.530, v4.7.531 or v4.7.532.
 Follow this procedure to add the new node to the existing cluster.

Note: The new node software version will be listed on the packing slip shipped with the node.

Note: New feature in v4.7.300 and higher: The new node will be upgraded to the cluster version

VxRail Dell Appliance Installation Procedure

Overview:
This procedure covers the physical hardware installation and configuration of a VxRail Dell Appliance to
exand an existing VxRail cluster. This procedure does not cover any of the network configuration tasks
necessary to result in a successful VxRail expansion. It is the customer’s responsibility to make certain
that the network requirements have been met for the VxRail Appliance prior to expanding the VxRail
cluster.

Pre-installation preparation
Perform the following:
3. Ensure the IP pool size is sufficient for the number of appliances in the cluster. Refer to individual
switch vendor documentation for the individual configuration and confirmation techniques for
customer relevant network elements.
4. Pay special attention to confirmation of customer network topology, differences in ToR switch models
including firmware and licenses within the planned target cluster.

VxRail Dell hardware installation overview

The procedure details the key steps necessary to install VxRail Dell hardware and prepare it for
implementation.
These steps include but are not limited to:
 Mounting the VxRail Appliances into the customer provided rack
 (If applicable) mounting the ToR Switches into the customer provided rack
 Cabling ToR switches to VxRail appliance nodes
 Connecting to the customer network
 Powering on VxRail appliance

IMPORTANT: Confirm network readiness before performing an installation. Failure to have a properly
configured Top of Rack switch will result in VxRail provisioning failure.

Note: Drive layout is set based on model type ordered and configured at the factory. Do not move drives
from their installed locatitions.

Site requirements
There are no restrictions on the location of the server in the cabinet. Allow at least 36 inches of service
clearance in front of and behind the cabinet. Power distribution must support the number of outlets
required for the servers and the server power rating listed on the Device Rating label on the chassis. For
additional information, refer to the preparation/planning guides for your specific site and cabinet.
Ensure you have the following available before installing the VxRail appliance:
 Two people to lift the VxRail appliance.
 Philips screwdriver.
 Laptop or PC with Internet access to register for DellEMC Online Support, and with local network
access to configure the VxRail system./
 A cable to connect the laptop or PC to the top-of-rack switch. This may require a media converter
depending on the type of ToR switch and the type of connectors on the appliance (SFP+ or RJ45).
 Two 220 VAC circuits.

Note: Nodes can be physically installed in a rack in any order, numerically top to bottom or bottom to top,
depending on Customer preference. The actual node numbering is alpha-numerical, based on the
Product I/SN found on the Asset Tag. The Asset Tag is a pullout tab on the front of the appliance. See
example below:

Installing and Removing Tool-less Rails (Square Hole or Round Hole Racks)

Position the left and right rail end pieces labeled FRONT facing inward and orient each end piece to seat in the holes on the front side
of the vertical rack flanges (1). Align each end piece in the bottom and top holes of the desired U spaces (2). Engage the back end of
the rail until it fully seats on the vertical rack flange and the latch clicks into place. Repeat these steps to position and seat the front
end piece on the vertical rack flange (3). To remove the rails, pull the latch release button on the end piece midpoint and unseat each
rail (4).

Removing the System From the Rack

Locate the lock levers on the sides of the inner rails (1). Unlock each lever by rotating it up to its release position (2). Grasp the sides
of the system firmly and pull it forward until the rail standoffs are at the front of the J-slots. Lift the system up and away from the rack
and place it on a level surface (3).

Configuring Flush-Mount Static Rails (Two- or Four-Post)
Locate the components for installing the rail kit assembly: NOTE: The rails must be converted to tooled rails to install in threaded four-post or flush-mount two-post racks.
Two Dell™ ReadyRails™ static rails (1) Lay both rails with the end pieces facing up. Remove the two screws on the front end pieces and rotate each piece 180 degrees (1).

Installing and Removing Tool-less Static Rails (Four-Post)
Position the left and right rail end pieces labeled FRONT facing inward and orient each end piece to seat in the holes on the front
side of the vertical rack flanges (1). Align each end piece in the bottom and top holes of the first U (2). Engage the back end of the
rail until it fully seats on the vertical rack flange. Repeat these steps to position and seat the front end piece on the vertical flange (3).
To remove the rails, pull on the latch release button on the end piece midpoint and unseat each rail (4).

Installing Flush-Mount or Center-Mount Static Rails (Two-Post)
NOTE: To configure your rails for a tooled flush-mount installation, refer to step 3. 1
2 Attach right and left mounting rails to the front mounting flanges with two pairs of screws (1). Slide each flush-mount adjustable
bracket forward against the two-post rack. Secure each side to the mounting flange with two pairs of screws (2).
For a center-mount installation, push the back brackets toward the back of the right and left mounting rails. Attach the fixed center
mount brackets to the front mounting flanges with two pairs of screws. Slide both of the back brackets forward against the two-post
rack and secure each side to the mounting flange with two screws (3).

Configuring Four-Post Threaded Static Rails
1 Insert the ends of the chassis rails into the front of the rails mounted to the rack and push the system into the rack (1). Depending
NOTE: To configure your rails for a tooled installation, you must perform step 3 and then perform the following steps for the back

Press the rail release button on each rail to disengage the back brackets (1). Rotate the back brackets 180 degrees so that the
tooled end piece is in the back position (2). With the end pieces positioned outward, align and rejoin the midsections. Slide the back
brackets into place until the release button engages (3).

on the rail configuration, the latches on the front of the system engage automatically (2). If the latches do not engage automatically,
secure the system in the rack by tightening the screw under each latch (3). Thread the Velcro straps through the slots on the back
brackets and use the Velcro straps to secure the cables (4). To remove the system from the rack, pull the system out until the travel
stops are reached. Locate the blue tabs on the sides of the chassis rails. Push the tabs inward and pull the system until the chassis
rails are clear of the rails (5).
WARNING: The travel stop position is intended for repositioning your grip for system removal. It is not intended for service.

 Properly install the appliance in a cabinet.
 Connect the VxRail NIC ports to one or more TOR switches.
 Verified with the customer that the TOR switch and supporting network are configured according to
the VxRail Networking Guide, including:
 Reserved, non-conflicting IP addresses
 Configured IPv4 and IPv6 multicast
 Disabled Link Aggregation on ToR switch (LACP/EtherChannel)
 Configured network services such as DNS
 Connect your management PC to the TOR switch.

To perform out-of-band systems management using iDRAC, you must configure iDRAC for
remote accessibility, setup the management station and managed system, and configure the
supported Web browsers.

Note: If setting up iDRAC on a G560 model node, you will need a Mini-DP to VGA adapter
for video output as this model used a Mini Display Port for video.

For VxRail, you must complete the following on each individual node in the cluster.

Bezels are application specific, and may not appear as shown. Bezels may include a key lock. All bezels
include two tabs on either side that you press in to release the bezel and its latches.

Network Configuration
Task 9: Adjust the Network Configuration
A cluster running a version prior to VxRail 4.7.000 and then upgraded to v4.7.100 or higher will hit an
issue when discovering the new nodes with v4.7.100 or higher. To avoid this, you need to adjust the
network configuration prior to the node expansion. To achieve this either change the cluster network to
suit the new nodes or change the new node’s VLAN to suit the cluster network. Choose either Step 1 or
Step 2.

1. [ ] To change the cluster network to suit the new nodes:

a. Go to vCenter Web vSphere client.

b. Go to Home > Networks.
