PASSAGE I: Carbon tetrachloride is colorless and inflammable liquid that can be produced by combining carbon disulfide and chlorine. This compound is widely used in industry today because of its effectiveness as a solvent as well as its use in the production of propellants. Despite its widespread use in industry, carbon tetrachloride has been banned for home use. In the past, carbon tetrachloride was a common ingredient in cleaning compounds that were used throughout the home, but it was found to be dangerous: when heated, it changes into a poisonous gas that can cause severe illness and even death if itis inhaled. Because of this dangerous characteristic, the United States revoked permission for the home use of carbon tetrachloride in 1970. The United States has taken similar action with various other chemical compounds, 1, The main point of this passage is that a. carbon tetrachloride ean be very dangerous when itis heated b. the government banned carbon tetrachloride in 1970 c. although carbon tetrachloride can legally be used in industry, it is not allowed in home products 4, carbon tetrachloride used to be a regular part of cleaning compounds 2. According to the passage, before 1970 carbon tetrachloride was .. a. used by itself as a cleanser b. banned in industrial use . often used as a component of cleaning products 4. not allowed in home cleaning products. 3. The simplest animals-such as the amoeba-react only to changes in light and dark. The night-erawling earthworm is eyeless but its entire skin is covered with light-sensitive cells; sunshine-or even the beam from a powerful flashlight-sends it burrowing into the ground. ‘More highly developed animals, such as birds and mammals, have evolved complex eye structures which register detailed pictures of the world about them. Hawks and eagles, which have the keenest sight of all, can spot a rabbit hopping through underbrush a thousand feet (305 m) below them. The giant eyes of these birds of prey outweigh their brains. The harassed rabbit has eyes placed ‘on either side of its head in such away that it can see a hawk swooping down from behind. An ow! has hhuge saucer-like eyes to help it see at night, and the eye structure of the dragonfly gives it a keen ability to judge motion. In every case, the way an animal perceives light is dictated by its particular needs-the way it catches food, how it evades its enemies, if it flies, swims or crawls, and whether its day begins at dawn or dusk. 11, In general, the text above informs that. ‘. each animal has its own way to react to their enemies b. animals have same vision system to identify light c. each animal has its own way to detect light and function their eyes to support their life 4. the predators use their eyes in dark it-crawling earthworm identify light? a. No, it cannot because it does not have any eyes b. Yes, itcan as long as the light is very intense c. No, it cannot because it lives underground 4. Yes, it can because it has skin containing cells which are sensible to light 13. Referring to the second paragraph, which information is not correct? a. Dragonfly has big structure of eyes to search prey at night b, Hawks and eagles have hunters’ eye structure which allow them to deteet prey from far distance . Birds and mammals posses eyes which can record things accurately 4. The light-sensitive cell of earthworm can detect sunlight 14, “An owl has huge saucer-like eyes to help it see at night.” Pronoun *it” in this context refers to. a. ahuge saucer b. night c.anowl —d.an ow!’ eyes 15, Isit possible for rabbits to notice hawks which attack them from back? a. Hawks and eagles can .........rabbits easily because..., a, hunt; they has fierce eyes b. hunt; they have fierce eyes c. hunting; fierce eyes d. hunted; fierce vision PASSAGE 3: Until a hundred years ago electricity and magnetism-while known and studied since early Greek times-were regarded as separate quantities. But the experiments of Oersted and Faraday in the nineteenth century showed that a current of electricity is always surrounded by a magnetic field, and conversely that under certain conditions magnetic force can induce electrical currents, From these experiments came the discovery of the electro-magnetic field through which light-waves, radio waves, and all other electro-magnetic disturbances are propagated in space. Thus electricity and- magnetism may be considered as a single force. Save for gravitation- nearly all the forees, chemical forces which hold atoms together in molecules, cohesive forces which bind large particles of matter, elastic forces which cause bodies to maintain their shape-are of electromagnetic origin: for all of these involve the interplay of matter, and all matter is composed of” atoms which in tur are composed of electric particles. 21. Sharks have gained an unfair reputation for being fierce predators of large sea animals. Humanity’s unfounded fear and hatred of these ancient creatures is leading to a worldwide slaughter that may result in the extinction of many larger, coastal shark species. The shark is the victim of a warped attitude of wildlife protection; we strive only to protect the beautiful, nonthreatening parts of our earth, we ignore other important parts. A perfect illustration of this attitude is the contrasting attitude toward another large sea animal, the dolphin. During the 1980s, environmentalist in the United States protested the use of drifinets for tuna fishing the Pacific Ocean since these nets also caught dolphins. The environmentalists generated enough political and economic pressure to prevent tuna companies from buying tuna that had been caught in drifinets. In contrast to the effort, the populations of sharks in the Pacific Ocean have decreased to the point of extinction and there has been very little effort by the same environmentalist to save this important species of marine wildlife. Sharks are among the oldest creatures on earth, having survived in the seas for more than 350 million years. They are extremely efficient animals, feeding on wounded or dying animals, thus performing an important role in nature ‘of weeding out the weaker animals in a species. .atoms together in 31. Partially constructed plants have been closed for several reasons. Construction costs have escalated, the demand for power has decreased, and the number of opponents to nuclear plants has increased tremendously. Nuclear energy, once expected to have a future with cheap, plentiful power is currently reaching a deadlock. ‘The major cause of the deterioration in the nuclear industry is the complete failure at Three Miles Island. It is common that machines break down and that people make errors, but when this happens at a nuclear plant, it can cause widespread disaster. It will take twenty years and more than a billion dollars (more than the cost to construct the plant) to clean up the nuclear plant at Three Miles Island. The most significant factor about the accident is, however, that it has destroyed the whole future of nuclear energy. Public opposition to nuclear plants, which existed but were still weak when the first nuclear plants were constructed, has become firm after the disastrous accident at Three Miles Island. Nevertheless, the nuclear plants that were built twenty and thirty years ago continue to ‘operate safely and economically. Smaller than more recently built plants, they have produced power that is consistently less expensive than power from coal or oil. Newer plants were larger, less safe, and managed and run by less qualified personnel. Many of these plants were designed and constructed 0 negligently that they are closed down. 41. The main point of the text is about. a. what makes nuclear energy a promising altemative bb. how nuclear plants are constructed c. why the nuclear industry has deteriorated dd. when the nuclear industry started 42, According to the text, the effect of the Three Miles Island accident is... ‘a. the widespread breaking down of machines b. the economical utilization of nuclear energy cc. the construction of smaller nuclear plants, d. the increase in the demand for nuclear power 43. Which of the following statement is TRUE about nuclear plants accidents? @, They have ruined people’s belief in nuclear energy b, They have increased the costs of producing the energy ¢. They are not likely to be caused by human error d. They have taken twenty years to rehabilitate 44. Compared with the newest nuclear plants, the old ones. 4. operated more efficiently and safely '. could not be maintained any longer ©. were not well designed and constructed 4. produced energy more expensive than coal 45, From the text we may conclude that. 2. objections to nuclear plants started after the Three Miles island accident b, itis impossible to save a nuclear plant from being ruined by an accident cc. new larger nuclear plants are being run by more qualified persons 4. despite its advantages, nuclear power involves high risks in its production 46.
