III. CONTENT NOTES
OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY (OHS) is a planned system of working
to prevent illness and injury where you work by recognizing and identifying hazards and
risks. Health and safety procedure are the responsibility of all persons in the computer and
technology industries. You must identify the hazards where you are working and decide
how dangerous they are. Eliminate the hazard or modify the risk that it presents.
1. GENERAL SAFETY TIPS AND REMINDERS
▪ Observe good housekeeping in the area of the machines during
and after maintenance.
▪ Place removed covers and other parts in a safe place, away
from all personnel, while you are servicing the machine. (Cryostar Industries,
Inc. 2020 )
▪ Keep your tool case away from walk areas so that other people
won’t trip over it.
▪ Do not wear loose clothing that can be trapped in the moving parts of a machine.
▪ Do not wear jewelry, chains, metal-frame eyeglasses or metal fasteners.
▪ After service, reinstall all safety shields, guards, labels ad ground wires.
▪ Re-install all covers correctly before returning the unit to the customers.

2. ELECTRICAL SAFETY
Electric current from power, telephone, and communication cables can
be hazardous. To avoid personal injury or equipment damage,
disconnect the attached power cords, telecommunications systems,

networks, and modems before you open the server/workstation

(CIty of Marco Island n.d.) covers, unless instructed otherwise in the installation and configuration
procedure.
PRECAUTIONS
▪ Disconnect all power before:
a. Performing a mechanical inspection
b. Working near power supplies
c. Removing or installing main units
▪ Before starting work on the machine unplug the power cord.
▪ Always look carefully for possible hazards in you work
a. Moist floors
b. Non-grounded power extension cables
c. Power surges
▪ If an electrical accident occurs:
a. Switch off power
b. Send another person to get medical aid.
3. SAFETY INSPECTION GUIDE
▪ These steps will help you identify potentially unsafe conditions or electrical
products.
a. Check exterior covers for damage (loose, broken, or sharp edges)
b. Power-off computer. Disconnect the power cord.
c. The power cord should be the appropriate type.
d. Insulation on the power cord must not be frayed or worn out.
e. Check for worn out, frayed or pinched cables.
f. Check at the power-supply cover fasteners (screws or rivets) have not been
removed or tampered with.

2
TEST PROCEDURES
A test procedure is a set of steps to guide you through what needs to be done to thoroughly test
the configuration. It is designed to help you work more effectively and to make sure you test
everything that need testing.

Test procedures are created in-house and could include these steps:
1. GATHERING TEST INFORMATION. The first step is to run the tests required by the
procedure and find out what happens. You should record all the results of your tests in a
log so that you know which pass and which fail, thereby requiring further action.

2. VALIDATING THE TEST INFORMATION. The next step is to check the data you
gathered from the tests to make sure it is correct. This is usually done by running the tests
again.

3. RESPONDING TO TEST INFORMATION. This step is important because you need to

be able to recognize when a test shows problems or is successful. For example, if ping is
used to test a network connection the ‘Request timed out’ shows the test was not successful.

4. CHECKING SPECIFICATION. The final step is an important end to testing. You need
to check the specification for the installation to make sure that it has been met. For example,
if a user requested an upgrade to make their display run at 1920 x 1200, the ICT professional
should check that the graphics card and screen can do this.

GUIDELINES FOR TESTING CONFIGURED COMPUTER SYSTEM AND

NETWORK

TESTING YOUR COMPUTER NETWORK

You've set up all your network switches, plugged in all the cables, and configured all your
computers. One task remains before you can declare your network is finished: You must verify
that the network works as expected.
Here are a few simple tests you can conduct to make sure your network is functional:
• Check the physical connections. Check that the Link light — the
little red or green light next to the RJ-45 port — is lit on every
computer. You must check this light both on the computer itself and
on the switch or router the computer is plugged into. If this light is
not on, you have a connection problem — most likely a bad cable. (192.168.l.l Login Admin 2020)

• Verify that you can log in. When you're sure the physical connections are good, you
should attempt to log in to each of your network computers using a valid domain user
account.
• Check the network configuration. Click the Start button,
type cmd and press Enter. Then, enter the
command ipconfig /all and press Enter. This comma nd will
spit out numerous lines of information. The line you're
looking for should resemble this:
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.125 (Preferred) (Digital Citizen Life n.d.)

If this part of the output does not show a valid IP address, you need to check that your IP
configuration is set correctly and that your DHCP server is working.

3
• Verify that the computers can ping each other. Another
basic test you should perform is to use the ping command
from a command prompt to make sure that the computers on
your network can contact one another.
Do several ping tests. First, make sure that TCP/IP is up and
running by having the computer try to ping itself. Open a (Digital Citizen Life n.d.)
command prompt and type ping local host. The output from this command will indicate
whether or not the ping was successful.
• Try to ping your servers by name. For example, if your file server is named FileServer01,
use the command ping FileServer01.

IV. ACTIVITIES
Activity 1: TRUE OR FALES
Directions: Write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if the statement is incorrect.

VI. ADDITIONAL READINGS / AGREEMENT / ASSIGNMENT

Effective Workplace Inspections
Workplace inspections help prevent incidents, injuries and illnesses. Through a critical
examination of the workplace, inspections help to identify and record hazards for corrective
action. Health and safety committees can help plan, conduct, report and monitor inspections.
Regular workplace inspections are an important part of the overall occupational health and
safety program and management system, if present.

Inspections are important as they allow you to:

• listen to the concerns of workers and supervisors
• gain further understanding of jobs and tasks
• identify existing and potential hazards

Types of workplace hazards include:

• Safety hazards such as those caused by inadequate machine guards, unsafe workplace
conditions, unsafe work practices.
• Biological hazards caused by organisms such as viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites.
• Chemical hazards caused by a solid, liquid, vapor, gas, dust, fume or mist.

Please answer the following questions in the provided answer sheet.

1. Why are workplace inspections important?
