Love
is a decision of a person to commit to another even in the presence of pain and sacrifice,
and that decision should never be grounded on emotions (heart) primarily because love, if
not nurtured for growth, can be the cause of a person’s destruction. Knowing a person’s
limits when loving is assisted by loving with the use of the mind, for example, the natural
love formed through familial bonds is based and strengthened on the empathetic ability of
the mind. Natural love can be defined as a decision to love and a decision to continue to
love because a person understands the strong bonds existing within their family. However,
this decision to love cannot be based on emotion since there are realities of negative
experiences within the family such as toxicity and abuse. An example of familial love based
on emotions is how a mother disregards the abuse caused by her husband because she
understands the existing bond within her family through her emotions of keeping the family
whole. Now, if the mother uses her mind to evaluate and analyze her and her family’s
situation, she would become an avenue to strengthen the family by deciding for her, for her
husband, and for their family’s well-being either through healthy separation or family
counseling. Her natural love for her family is based on her intellectual ability to deduce a
situation and understand what is the best system for the family to grow, without primarily
relying on her emotions. Hence, the natural love of familial bonds based on the mind is also
strengthened with its empathetic ability to enable growth without sacrificing stability.
