OBJECTIVE:

This Lab is intended to show you how to create, simulate, and analyze a ‘Planar Monopole Antenna’
using wave port in Ansoft HFSS design environment.

INTRODUCTION:
 A monopole antenna is a radio antenna that is one half of a dipole antenna, almost always
mounted above some sort of ground plane.
 One half of the dipole is replaced by the ground plane. (1/4 λ)
o Earth.
o Car roof or trunk lid or other metal surface.
o Radial wires.
 Radiation pattern of monopole antenna is ‘omni-directional’.

 Begin a Design
To begin working with geometries, you must insert an HFSS design. Right-Click the project file and
select Insert -> Insert HFSS Design from the menu.

 From the HFSS menu, select solution type and then driven model.
 Also select unit as ‘mm’ from ‘Modeler’ menu.

 Let’s start by creating the ‘Substrate’ using the Draw box button from the toolbar.

 Give the name ‘substrate’ to this object. Assign the material FR4_epoxy and then click OK.

 Now, under the command tab enter the following information:

o Position: 0,0,0
o Xsize:75mm
o Ysize:100mm
o Zsize: -0.254mm

 Draw the rectangle and enter the following:

o Position: 35.6,0,0 mm
o Xsize: 3.8mm
o Ysize: 41mm

 Select rectangle 2 and rectangle 4 and press the ‘subtract’ button again. Your design will appear
as:

 Now select the rectangle 1 and rectangle 2 and unite them by clicking on ‘unite’ button from toolbar.
 Rename the ‘rectangle 1’ as ‘Antenna’.
 Click on ‘rectangle’ from toolbar and create it by entering the following:

 Select the plane ‘XY’ and draw a box for radiation.

 Rename the box as ‘Rad_Box’ and enter the following in command window:
o Position: 0, 100, -40 mm
o Xsize: 75 mm
o Ysize: -100mm
o Zsize: 80mm

 Change the transparency of ‘Rad_Box’ to 0.8.

 Select faces of ‘Rad_Box’ and assign ‘Radiation’ boundary.
 Select ‘Rectangle 5’ and ‘Rectangle 6’ and assign the boundary ‘Perfect E’.
 Select the ‘Antenna’ and assign boundary ‘Perfect E’.
 Assign waveport to ‘port’ structure.
