REFLECTIVE WRITING

Reflect on your experience taking LPE2501 Academic Writing and provide short
responses to the following questions:

1. What was your overall experience taking LPE2501 Academic Writing?

I had a fun time learning LPE2501 Academic Writing! It is an interesting subject

and has increased my knowledge in writing academically. I have learned many
things such as how to write better, how to locate and composite better research
through the use of resources, and avoid plagiarism in writing as the ideas or works
need to be credited to their original authors. Moreover, I can write in variety
techniques and styles through the writing portfolio task that are given for students.
These are important for us, students as we might need these skills for our
paperwork and thesis writing in near future. Not to mention that we also have a
super nice lecturer, Mr Othman has been a really cool and funny lecturer, he is
also strict and serious at the right time. Overall, this course is enjoyable and
knowledgeable and if given a chance, I wouldn’t hesitate to take it again!

2. What did you find useful about LPE2501 Academic Writing? List at least three things.

1. Use a variety of sentence types such as simple, compound, and complex sentences
2. Coherence and unity
3. Paraphrase and summarising

3. Are there any writing topics/skills you wish you had learned in LPE2501 Academic
Writing?

I wish I had learned how to write poems. I believe poetry is very important because it can
enhance creativity, improves vocabulary, and helps us to express ourselves. I find it
relevant to learn poetry now as most of us have plenty of time at home and we can really
sit down and brainstorm. Moreover, poetry require less words means I don’t need to type
as much as I am typing for LPE2501 Academic Writing and I can even use poetry as pick-
up lines or love letter for girls!

4. Did you encounter any challenges while learning to write academically?

If yes, describe the challenges and explain any actions you have taken to overcome the
challenges.

I was thinking of writing “No” so I can leave it blank but I will be honest since honesty is
the best policy.

Yes, I struggle with paraphrasing as I couldn’t find certain words to fit in as some words
might have the same meanings but it just doesn’t feel the same when put into paragraphs.
Therefore, I overcome my challenge by utilising websites like online paraphraser,
thesaurus and google translate to help me find words that are the right fit.

5. What will you do to further improve your academic writing skills to be more effective in the
future?

As advised by Mr Othman, I will need to brush up my on my basics such as grammar,

spelling and vocabulary. Next, I would definitely need to read more as the saying goes
“the best writers are also keen readers”. I will make reading a regular basis and expand
my horizons to more challenging materials as I go further into my journey. Overall, I am
going to brush up on my basics and make myself a bookworm.
