Course Objective: The course give a basic introduction to the concepts of statistics and
probability theory. Students are going to learn the core concepts of statistics and probability with
hands on exercies. The course enables students to apply the learned concepts in solving varieties
of real life problems.

Module I:

Definition and scope of statistics, Type of statistics, Concept of statistical population and sample
Data, Quantitative and Qualitative attributes, Variables, Scales of Measurement, Presentation of
data, Bivarite data: Definition, Scatter diagram.

Module II:

Mesures of Central Tendency: Mathematical and positional. Measures of Dispersion: Range,


Quartile deviation, Mean deviation, Standered deviation, Coefficients of variation, Skewness and
kurtosis, Correlation: Simple, Partial Multiple and Ranke correlation, Simple linear regression,
Principle of least squares and fitting of polynomials.

Module-III:

Probability: Introduction, Random experiments, sample space, Events and algebra of events,
Conditional Probability, Laws of addition and multiplication, Independent events, Theorem of
Total Probability, Bayes’s theorem and its Applications.
