Outcome
(CO)
1 Solve following [2+3] CO1, CO3
(a) Define Binomial distribution. State real life situation for
Binomial distribution
(b) According to Information Resources, which publishes
data on market share for various products, Oreos control
about 10% of the market for cookie brands. Suppose 20
purchasers of cookies are selected randomly from the
population. What is the probability that fewer than four
purchasers choose Oreos? Calculate mean and variance
for the distribution.

2 Solve following [2+3]

(a) Define Poisson distribution. State real life situation, CO1, CO3
mean and variance for Poisson distribution.
(b) Suppose bank customers arrive randomly on weekday
afternoons at an average of 3.2 customers every 4
minutes. What is the probability of exactly 5
customers arriving in a 4-minute interval on a
weekday afternoon?
3 Machines A, B, and C all produce the same two parts, X and Y. [5] CO1, CO2
Of all the parts produced, machine A produces 60%, machine B
produces 30%, and machine C produces 10%. In addition,
40% of the parts made by machine A are part X.
50% of the parts made by machine B are part X.
70% of the parts made by machine C are part X.

A part produced by this company is randomly sampled and is

determined to be an X part. With the knowledge that it is an X
part, revise the probabilities that the part came from machine B.
4 Solve following
(a) Define Normal distribution. State real life situation for [2+3] CO1, CO3
(b) The Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT), produced
by the Educational Testing Service in Princeton, New Jersey, is
widely used by graduate schools of business in the United
States as an entrance requirement. Assuming that the scores
are normally distributed, probabilities of achieving scores
over various ranges of the GMAT can be determined. In a
recent year, the mean GMAT score was 494 and the standard
deviation was about 100.What is the probability that a
randomly selected score from this administration of the
GMAT is between 600 and the mean?
5 Solve following [2+3] CO6
(a) State Central limit theorem. How it is useful in determining
sampling distribution of mean and Proportion.
(b) Define point estimate and interval estimate.
