Opening

A. Greeting
You may thank the Toastmaster or person who introduced you and acknowledge fellow
Toastmasters and guests.

Thank you, Toastmaster of the Evening, fellow toastmasters and Guests.

B. Capture audience interest

Did you know,

Would you believe that out of 100 babies that were born 6 months, an average of 14 will die, and 86 will live to

go home. And that 86 survivors, 87% would likely develop mild to severe disability.

C. Introduce yourself

Fellow toastmasters and guests, good evening.

Apparently, that statistics is from the U.S. Knowing that we are in a third world country, the odds could

even be worse. And to top it off, it was year 1988, 10th day of January. A 26 weeks old baby, was being delivered

thru forceps so that the doctors could save him.

It was then Bb Boy Bacalso that my parents were forced to celebrate, my first day on earth. The doctors

have warned my family, that I may have only have one day to live. And yet my family had again celebrated my

first week and I was named Jericho Paolo Bacalso.

My lungs were not yet developed yet. As a bunch of doctors would visit me and examine, as I have lived

past the 7, and 8-month-old babies that were also pre-mature like me.

My pedia have waived his professional fees, as he had also gone thru the pain that my family have went

thru. Thinking that anytime it was me that was being rushed by all the doctors of Perpetual Succour for

emergency.

D. Transition
And yet here I am now, delivering prematurely my ice-breaker speech. As I must also perform a forceps-

delivery for my piece. I have just made this speech last Sunday.

Body
A. Main point 1
Thru out my life, it was never about how lucky I am that I could survive from being a premature baby to a
mature person that I am now.

It was tough reaching here. From a sibling of 5 and me as the middle child, it was not easy having the
pressure from both ends. It was always me that would have to adjust for the other. “Cge lang dong, manghud
man na; Cge lang dong, maguwang man na nimu”. I was being brought up to put others first before myself.

And having that also had its pros and cons. I was able to adapt with ease to any environment that I am in.
And it had also brought me in having to accept that I can never be the first or be the person on top. I have always
had loss my confidence.

I could never forget my elementary days in CIC Cebu. My sister was grade 5 and I was at the 4 th grade.
Our classrooms were not that far.

She had always been the most out-standing student of her class. And I am also the most-outstanding
student of my class too. That’s why she often noticed that I am always outside of our classroom. “literally the
most “outstanding” student of our class – Naa jud sa gawas nag tindog”.

Although my Mom had always hoped that I could top my class. But I always chose not to be on that
spotlight. Having that, it allowed me to have the pleasure to not listen to our teacher in every class. My body and
soul was on the classroom, but my mind was wandering off to what team will I play with “bahaw-bahaw” this
lunchtime, how can I buy that brick-game when I only have 5 pesos allowance each day less peanuts every
dismissal, and most importantly how can I convince my sister to do my homework so I can continue to play when
we get home. It allowed to bring-out the creativeness in me.

B. Main point 2

And yes, I was being the best runner in every “bahaw-bahaw” game that we played. Having to hone my
skills in evasive-running while catching the fat one’s first. I’m sorry to be harsh. But it had also caused me a
teared-up uniform.

I was also able to buy that brick-game that I was saving. Thru not only saving my allowance, and having
some days that I must sacrifice no to eat peanuts. But I was able to ask money from my mother for some ghost-
projects at school.

My time playing outside while my sister is doing my homework have forced my parents to have me a
tutor. A more efficient time to do homework and more playtime.

This creativeness had made me far from my imagination to some impossible things that I could never
thought be possible. When reaching high school in USC-Boys High, who could have ever thought, and

perhaps have done, that with the advancement of our time, I was able to have a girlfriend that was a 4 th year, a 3rd
year, a 2nd year and a first-year student like me, all at one time. Please don’t completely blame it on me.
Technology and statistics have also had their fair share too.

Having that heartbreaking experience of getting to date two or three girlfriends in one Saturday, only to
go home riding a jeep hoping to have a neighbor ride with me no “Pamlete”, I was forced to think economically.

C. Main point
On my second year, while I was waiting for my siblings to school, an old lady passed by our house. She
was bringing a big basket, and had offered me to buy some “Masi”. It was just about 2 pesos per piece. So I
brought 10 pieces to school.

On recess, my classmates saw me eating “Masi” and asked me if it is from the famous masi of Lilo-an. I
said yes, and he bought 7 pieces of masi for 5 pesos. Having that thought, I have planned to sell again the next
day.

And so that started my entrepreneurship. My “Masi” business was getting better as I have also targeted
not only my classmates but also to other classes as well. I kept my “suki” who assured me that they would buy 10
pieces a day. It come to a point that I could no longer sell all to my batch that I have to hire a few of my
classmates to sell for me.

Like in any business it has its ups and downs,
