A Journey Home

Directed by Paul Soriano

Context
The movie, “A Journey Home”, revolves around a story of a seeming
hopelessness in the life of a Dante Santos – a father of two. 20 years ago, he
remembers clearly the leaving he had to do to his wife and his then younger
children to work overseas. 20 years after, he returns to his homeland – seemingly
empty handed, jumping from long queues of job hiring to another. In pursuit of
survival and still finding meaning for his life, he comes to know of, in the arbitrary
in one of his early morning newspaper reading, the death of his wife. To pay visit
at the wake of his wife, he meets again his children – now grown-ups and
professional. He remembers how much pain his children must have been bearing
all these time of the abandonment he has done to them. in his series of attempts
to regain the love, trust, and affection a child must have towards his father, Dante
finds out of his terminal-staged kidney cancer. In the end, Dante dies to cancer –
having apologized sincerely to his children, having been forgiven, having returned
to God’s favor, and having done the things he should have long done.
