The author’s use of foreshadowing contributes to the overall impact of the story by

greatly enhancing the reader’s willingness to read on. An example of foreshadowing in the text is

when the author says, “He opened his eyes in the darkness and saw above him a gleam of light,

but how distant, how inaccessible”. The author hints toward the light being inaccessible, which it

was. The light was an allegory for life and how it was growing “fainter and fainter”. The story

says he came back up (allegory for rebirth), but, unfortunately, he never did. This example of

foreshadowing not only enhances the reader’s willingness to read the story, but it also

strengthens the plot line.
