Topic Sentences is often the first in the paragraph, but not always.
It tells MAIN IDEA of the paragraph.
It tells what author want to say.

1. A controlling idea limits the subjects.
2. It can express an opinion.
3. It can provide focus by answering a question.

Focus of Paragraph
 
 
A topic sentence will tell the SUBJECT of the paragraph and may answer one of
these questions:
Why?
Which?
Where?
What?
How?
