It is also a general purpose millisecond digital timing device for use manually by light gates or electronic triggering. APPARATUS DETAILS ‘The unit is housed in a metal case with moulded plastic ends, which are easily removable for fuse replacement. All the controls are situated on the front panel of the instrument. The instrument is mains operated. ‘The bright orange/red LED has six digits, 24 mm high, making it suitable for individual or class use. The desired mode of use is selected by setting the function switch into one of three positions: ‘The counting position for radioactivity counting; the timing position for manual operation of the millisecond timer; and the triggered timing for light gate operation of the timer. In the radioactivity mode, the built-in EHT supply provides a GM tube supply voltage. This is adjustable between 300-500 V by the GM tube Scaler Timer supply control. An internal pre-amplifier enables a solid state alpha particle detector to be directly connected to the instrament. Loudspeaker sockets are provided for use when an audible indication of count rate is required. In the timing mode, the display features ‘most significant figure blanking’ ‘The clear display reads in seconds from 0,000 up to 999,999 and increments in ms Lamp supply sockets of 2 V0.5 A a.c. and 6 V0.5 Aa.c. are provided for tuse with lamps or light gates when used to control timing operations. ‘Warning: Care should be taken when connecting lamps and light gates to these sockets because it is possible to obtain 8V a.c. between one of the 6 V sockets and the grounded 2 V socket. The following controls are common to both radioactivity counting and timing modes; mains on/off, reset switch and stop/start switch. INSTALLATION Connection to the mains supply is made by a 3-core detachable mains cable, to which a suitable plug must be fitted: BROWN wire to LIVE pin BLUE wire to NEUTRAL pin ‘YELLOW/GREEN wire to EARTH pin _,-_ Scaler Timer OPERATING PROCEDURE Radioactivity measurements Connect a GM tube to the screw input socket, or a solid state alpha particle Getector to the BNC socket. fusing a GM tube, set the Gat wake supply control to the recommended supply voltage (usually 420 V) [{zcauired, connect a loudspeaker of impedance 3 Q to 50.2 to the loudspeaker sockets Set the stop/start switch to stop and the function switch to counting. Switch on the mains switch and depress the reset button to zero the display, Timing Measurements 1. Manual control Set the function switch to timing and the stop/start switch to stop, Switch on the mains and depress the reset pushbutton to zero the display. Ciming is then controlled by the stop/start switch, and the instrument can be used this way for all experiments where a stopwatch or 5 Scaler Timer stopclock would normally be used. The display will count up in increments of 1 ms, (0 a maximum count of 999.999 s. Electrical control Set the function switch to timing and the stop/start switch to stop. Switch on the mains and depress the reset pushbutton to zero the display. ‘Timing can now be controlled by switches, photo transistors, or light dependent resistors (such as cadmium sulphide cells) connected 10 the Sturt and stop sockets. Timing will commence when the start sockets are closed and the stop sockets are open and stop when the stop sockets are closed. ‘Triggered timing et the function switch to triggered timing and the stop/start switch to stop. Switch on the mains, Connect light gates to the start and stop sockets (the black socket is common). Depress the reset button. Momentarily breaking the start beam will commence the timing, and momentarily breaking the stop beam will stop the timing. Light must full-on the ‘start’ beam again before the stop beam is interrupted, otherwise timing will not stop. Scaler Timer MAINTENANCE, Fuse replacement: Should it be necessary to replace the internal fuse, disconnect the unit from the mains and remove the moulded end panel incorporating the mains input socket. This is done by removing the two large countersunk screws in the moulding and the two round head self- tapping screws on the rear panel adjacent to the moulding using a Pozidrive screwdriver. The glass fuse link is situated on the internal printed circuit board. Replace the fuse with one of the correct rating: P67350/5 - 250 mA anti-surge P67351/7 - 500 mA anti-surge SPECIFICATION ‘Mains input 220-240 V 50/60 Hz P67350/5 110-120 V 50/60 Hz P70071/5, Display: 6 digit 14 mm LED featuring most significant blanking Timing oscillator: 1000 Hz (1 ms period) Accuracy: 40.5%, typically +0.2% SS Scaler Timer Radioactivity inputs GM tube via PET socket with integral 300- 500 V variable supply solid state alpha detector via BNC socket with integral pre- amplifier Timing inputs: manually switched stop/start light gate operated start/stop mechanical switch closure start/stop triggered timing start/stop (momentary interruption of light beam) Outputs: 2 and 6 V 0.5A 2. loudspeaker output via 4 mm sockets Philip Harris Education Lyte Seren eis Ste WSIEOEE ‘tne 0 077 Fa A omaamonmce OF EE
