My name is Charles Babbage and I was born on the 26 th of December, 1791 in
London. I am a mathematician, philosopher, inventor, and mechanical engineer and I am the
one who originated the concept of a digital programmable computer. From 1828 to 1839 I
occupied the lucasian chair of mathematics at Cambridge. In the world of computing, I was
known for my machines: the “Difference Engines” (one of which, the No. 1 he produced a
partial prototype) and the “Analytical Engine”.
Some considered me to be the “father of the computer”, because I am the first
person invented the first mechanical computer that eventually led to more complex electronic
designs, though all the essential ideas of modern computers are to be found in my invention
