Prenatal care involves counseling and education of pregnant women on how to handle different aspects

of their pregnancy. The medical checkups and screen testing helps pregnant women and their baby to
be in healthy condition during the pregnancy. During the medical checkups the doctor discusses many
issues with the women such as the physical activity and health eating in avoidance of foodborne
illnesses like toxoplasmosis and listeriosis , the screen testing needed, the vaccines during pregnancy,
avoidance over the counter medicine due to their effect on the fetus and what the women might
experience during labor and delivery. During prenatal care several lab tests are carried out such as
RPR(test for sexually transmitted diseases), complete blood count, test for liver infection and hepatitis B,
Urinalysis test, type and screen of the blood test , the Rubella test for the immunity and HIV screening
are done.

Prenatal care is essential since the health provider ensures the health of the women and the baby is in
good condition throught the pregnancy period. Also the healthcare provider allows the women follow
the progress of the baby’s growth. The prenatal checkups also gives women and their families chance to
talk to the healthcare providers concerning the pregnancy and the birth.
