My Dream House
My name’s Mark. We all know that every living person
needs a place to stay. And that place is your home. A home|
is a place filled with joy, love, laughter, happiness and some-
times sadness, too. So we all want to have a nice home.
Now let’s dream a little. What is my dream house like? I
can describe it in two words: big and comfortable. It is away
from the noisy city centre, somewhere in the countryside. It’s.
a detached house of course, not a small cottage. There’s a
small river nearby and a green lawn in front of it. From the
outside the house is modern, with very big windows and bal-
conies on each side. There are two stories in my house with
an open air swimming pool at the top of the roof. Of course
we have a garage and enough parking space.
In the basement there’s some kind of a recreation cen-:
tre. | mean, it has everything you need not to feel bored. Like
video games, darts and painting stands.
On the ground floor | have a spacious kitchen with all the
equipment: a coffeemaker, a dishwasher, a fridge, cup-
boards and whatnot. There’s also a huge living room with the
dining room. So we can gather together with all the family to
watch a film or just chat. And for that there are comfortable
sofas with lots of cushions there. The dining room has a big
oval table, so there’s place for everyone.
| want to have a gym on the ground floor, too, because |
love sport. The utility room is not far from the kitchen.
On the first floor everyone can enjoy their private time.
There’s a bedroom with a shower for me and bedrooms for
each member of the family and two or three small rooms for
guests. | also want to have a library upstairs. You know, a real
library with high bookshelves and big armchairs where you
can sit and enjoy a book.
Outside there’s a big garden. And somewhere near the
corner of the land there’s a small fireplace for barbecue.
With a loving view of the mountains this place is the nicest
part.
Well, that’s my dream house. Sure | have some more
ideas about i . [just hope | will get it one day.

A Day in the Life of the Queen
Many people think that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II
has an easy life. She stays in her beautiful palace, travels
abroad and does nothing else. Actually, it’s not true. The
Queen’s day is very busy.
The Queen begins her day like many people — with a
good breakfast. That is usually cornflakes and porridge, yog-
hurt and marmalade.
The Queen’s working day begins at her desk. She reads
the daily British newspapers and checks her correspondence.
It's hard to believe but she gets over 300 letters a day. Of
course Her Majesty cannot read them all, so she just reads
some of them and tells her staff members how to answer them.
Then the Queen sees her Private Secretaries who bring
her the official papers and documents to read and sign. All

this takes about an hour. Together, they also go through the
day’s programme - receiving a new ambassador, visits to
hospitals, other public events.
Later comes the time for official meetings, or “audi-
ences”: the Queen sees some important people, like foreign
ambassadors, ministers, or judges. Each meeting lasts 10 to
20 minutes, and usually the Queen and her visitor meet alone.
Then it’s lunchtime. Her Majesty prefers to have lunch
privately. However, every few months she and the Duke of
Edinburgh (her husband) invite guests to an informal lunch.
Every afternoon at 2.30 pm, the Queen goes for a walk in the
palace grounds. The rule is that if anybody is in the garden,
they must leave. Nobody can talk to her. It’s possible only if
she speaks first. She likes walking alone, because it’s her
thinking time.
The rest of the afternoon is devoted to the Queen’s so-
cial duties and public engagements. She visits schools, hos-
pitals, factories, homes for elderly people, hostels for the
homeless, and other different organisations. The Queen
often goes to open events and buildings, and make
speeches.
If the engagement is outside London, the Queen travels
by air, using a helicopter or a plane. All in all there are about
430 engagements every year.
If there is no public visit, the Queen spends the evening
at the palace. She fills in a crossword, often watches televi-
sion with supper on a tray, and goes to bed at around 11 pm.
But quite often the lights are on until midnight. The Queen
studies confidential documents and reads other official
papers.

hands to pick up things.
B. Compared to other animals, they are very intelligent. They
live in the sea and are very fast-moving. They are very
friendly with people. They often jump out of the water and
enter the water again gracefully. They communicate with
each other by clicking, whistling and other sounds.
C. They have long bodies, long tails and rather short legs.
The tail is good to keep balance when climbing. The animals
are green or light grey. They mostly like eating plants includ-
ing leaves and fruit. They have very sharp teeth to help them
eat up leaves and plants.
D. They are very different. Most of them have tails. Some
of them live on the ground, while others live in trees. They
eat a variety of foods, such as fruit, insects, flowers, and
leaves. But lots of people believe bananas are thei

Harrods
“Harrods” is perhaps the most famous department store
in London. It attracts shoppers from all over the world. Mil-
lions of customers go throught its doors every day. It’s the
largest deparment store in Europe with a space of over a mil-
lion square feet and 330 different departments on seven
floors.
The shop’s motto is “All Things for All People, Every-

tronics, pets, toys, food and drink, furniture, sports equip-
ment, household goods and much more. And in case you are

“Hogmanay” is the Scottish name for the last day of the
year. But today Hogmanay is a festival which lasts not one
but three days. It is, perhaps, the biggest celebration in Scot-
land and nowadays people throw parties at home or join in
the street parades.
There are some very old traditions around Hogmanay
and here are some of them. Firstly, people prepare for the

new year by cleaning their houses and throwing away any-
thing old or unwanted. They do this because they believe it
brings good luck for the coming year. Immediately after mid-
night it is traditional to sing “Auld Lang Syne”, a song written
by the national Scottish poet Robert Burns.
Another Hogmanay tradition is the “first-foot”. This is
the first person who comes into your house after midnight
on the first of January. People say it should be a dark-haired
man. It’s even better if the “first-foot” brings a gift with them
and traditionally this could be a coin, bread, salt, coal for
the fire, or a drink. These represent the money, food,
flavour, warmth and happiness that you get in the coming
year! Outside there is live music everywhere and a lot of
fireworks displays. Everybody sings, dances to music and
has fun.

A. Stonehenge is a probably the best-known pre-historic
monument in the world. It stands on Salisbury Plain in the
south-west of England. It consists of a group of huge stones
that stand on the ground in two circles. In some cases, there
is another stone on top of them. There is a big stone in the
very centre of Stonehenge. Archaeologists believe it was
built between 4,000 and 5,000 years ago.
B. Stonehenge hides a lot of secrets. Like, it’s still not clear
who built it. One legend says that the Devil placed the stones
there. Another legend tells us that the great magician Merlin
created the monument. And there’s one more theory that
thousands of years ago giants turned into these stones.
However, these are not scientific explanations. Maybe it was
the aliens?
C. The stones of Stonehenge are different but all huge and
heavy. The largest stone is about 7 m tall (taller than a giraffe)
and weighs about 25 tons (heavier than 5 elephants). The
builders of Stonehenge cut them from the rock more than
200 km away and carried to the site. We don’t know exactly
how they moved these large stones. This is another mystery
of the place.
D. Another big question is why people built Stonehenge. This
is one of the great mysteries of Britain. Some people think it
yarn
was a place for religious ceremonies to worship the sun, oth-
ers say it was an ancient calendar. Archaeologists believe
that the ancient builders had some knowledge about astron-
omy. On 21st June (the longest day), the sun rises directly
above the central stone.
