When creating Melodic House & Techno, you’ll find
that you don’t need your basslines to be rolling like
you’d find in Tech House genres. With melodic
stuff, try to have sustained basslines and focus
more on the actual melody than the groove. If
you’d like to have a shorter sustained bass synth
then try and bring up the release time to create a

To get amazing sounding drums in your tracks you
must start with high quality samples. You’ll find

Because your bass synth is unusually longer and TECHNO SOUNDS

SIMPLICITY
Keep it simple! There is always a tendency to add
more and more into your production, especially if
you have been working on it for a while. While
having plenty of elements in a track can be a good
thing, Techno and Melodic style house is less about
how many different cool electronic sounds you can
fit into a track, and more the power of repetition
and progression. Work on the elements you do
have and make sure they are sounding absolutely
awesome. Then review the track after this and see
if it needs anything else.
A lot of DAW's also have plugins or features which
can help you easily construct chords if you are not
sure which notes to use. 7th, 9th, and 13th notes
are always good if you are looking to ‘add some
decent chords in your production. A great way to
experiment is getting your hands on a keyboard,
and just play until you get a loop that sounds great.
Failing that, just mess around on a piano and see
what you can come up with.

KICK AND BASS

Work on your kick and bassline to see if you can
pair them together nicely. When making music that
falls under the techno genre, you will want your
kick drum and bassline to stand out the most, so
use a kick that is in the same key as the bass to
make sure they don not conflict. And make sure
they are both correctly EQ’d.

CHORDS
Try experimenting with different chord patterns. If
you can get a good sounding chord pattern which
uses unusual notes, it can do your track wonders.
Experiment when making chords and melodies in a
riff, to make sure your melody sound great.
