How Mise En Scene criticism and semiotic analysis constitutes one of


the most useful means by which we may understand the generation of
meaning in moving image work.

Introduction
When you watch a film, the story is told through the actions and dialogue of the actors. Yet
below the surface and hidden in plain sight are deeper layers of communication comprised of
many elements. These include, but are not limited to, the composition of the shot, the props
used, the lighting, even the very make-up of the actors. All of these emphasise and reinforce the
story being played out on screen.

We use semiotic analysis and Mise En Scene criticism to understand these signs and their
deeper meaning in connection to the film we are watching, to better appreciate the story being
told.
