1. Introduction

In recent years, together with the development of the country, the educational branch has
changed with regard to quantity and quality, and it is also becoming a common concern
of the whole society. The education branch is asking a pressing requirement in order to
enhance the quality of education more than ever in all the learning level and branch of
learning. The education and training plays the important role and essential factor in order
to the development of the country. Not only in Vietnam that countries in the world
considers a education as the top national policy for national development. Education is a
prerequisite condition in order to decide the economic of a country have economic
development or not, the country has many talents in order to serve the country or not.

The issue of teaching the "student-centered" and "teacher-centered" have been relatively
mentioned a lot in teaching materials at home and abroad. In Vietnam , there is many the
opinions of this issue. Have an opinion that it is necessary to get "student-centered" in the
process of teaching and learning, However, there are still many who believe that method
of teacher-centered is considered a better and more effective approach in teaching and
learning process.

1.1 Education in the old days

Confucian education of the feudal state of Vietnam, from from the eleventh century went
through the Ly, Tran, Ho, Hau Le, Tay Son, Nguyen dynasties. The birth and widely use
of the Vietnamese script according to the Latin board in the school since the end of 1919.
This is given the signal of ending the Confucian education in order to replace the system
of modern education of French colonialism.

1.2 Education at present

Education in this period with regard to basically satisfied the needs to study from the
people. Achieving the major target in the strategy of educational development: improving
the intellectual standards of the people, training manpower, fostering talents in order to
develop the country and international integration. System of the school and the
educational scale have developed rapidly, social justice in approach education has made
much progress, especially for ethnic minorities, rural labours, object of policy and people
in difficult circumstances, gender equality is guaranteed. The quality of education and
training has been raised, contributing to respond the needs with regard to the human
resources for socio-economic development, building and protecting the fatherland.

increased more and gradually modernize. Socializing education and international
cooperation have been promoted, achieving many important results.

1.3 The importance of education

The education and training plays the important role and essential factor in order to the
development of the country. Not only in Vietnam that countries in the world considers a
education as the top national policy for national development. Education and training are
the prerequisite condition so that economic development, contribute to socio-political
stability and above all other in the education and training contributes to enhance the index
of human development. A weakness and shortcoming education will not be trained the
source of qualitive manpower. If without good manpower, Vietnam will lag behind,
unable to develop in a world change every day. In general we can see that, in many
decades through fostering, training and promoting human resources are always the top
concern and it is the central mission of party, the whole people with a intellectuals line-
up making the core. Putting people in the center of development, people are the target
and a motive power of socio-economic development, creating a basis in order to perform
endogenous development, that is a socio-economic development, due to people and
because people, combine between economic growth and social development and return to
serving cultural development, taking national culture as launching pad for advanced
technology, taking human resources is the basic condition in order to perform
industrialization and modernization. Therefore, with respect to us, education has a very
important role with regard to the country's destiny.

2. Body
2.1 Student-centered
2.1.1 Definitions

In former days, the traditional method take a teacher-centered, all knowledge is


communicated in through the teacher, and only the teacher who decides this knowledge
is correct or not. Nowadays, system of the education have applied a method of "student-
centered". This is a conception, the trend of teaching to turn to the learner, to give
prominence to subject, take actively a initiative of learners.

Most the educational specialist above the world thinks that get the "Student-centered" at
the present is becoming more essential and standard in comparison with traditional
teaching, where students sit the silence and listen with concentration to the teacher's
lecture. However, this point of view is not synonymous with lower the role of the teacher.
On the contrary, this philosophy establishes the teacher with a new role, who is a

observer, witnessing, supporting and travelling with student. Point of view with regard to
"student-centered", it ask a high requirement with respect to the teacher's ability.
Teachers must be capable of organizing a study, to be master of a student's activities.

2.1.2 Real situation

In recent years, the terminology with regard to "student-centered" has become familiar
and has been recognized in many the research in foreign and domestic. With respect to
Vietnam's education and training, the methods of "student-centered" training has been
seriously researched in some teachers college, very much a training courses have been
used this method and achieved satisfactory results.

Currently, many schools have applied the method "student-centered" especially the
international schools. Altogether different from traditional method "teacher-centered".
The philosophy of "Student-centered" is a core element of modern education. At
Gateway, was always shown in every teaching period, every educational activity and
teaching methods of each teacher in all system of Gateway school. It's incessantly
enhancing, perfecting professional as well as research, study, exchange experiences in
order to find the methods of suitable teaching with the new requirements, , that is a way
to each teacher get "student-centered" in all the educational activities.

Point of view with regard to "student-centered" is also shown in the forms of teaching
organization and methods of suitable teaching. Gateway is deploying method "Learning
by doing". Students are developed comprehensive with regard to skills such as logical,
the capability to collaborate, solve the problem. To adopt the process of practice, bringing
theory into practice, students will enhance knowledge for one's own. Forms of organizing
a teaching that is used the most, that is self-taught, studied according to group, practical
activities,... The curriculum and the study environment at Gateway are designed so that
help students to discover, to develop a capacity, a potential possibilities, developed
critical thinking. Thenceforward, students have the ability to acknowledge problems in
many dimensions.

The method of "student-centered" creates real learning and labor.

2.1.3 The interests of student-centered.

There are many the interests of student-centered methods. Teaching according to this
methods with a view to helping students raise the sense of initiative in learning, discover
a potential of the student and teachers will help students have confident and responsibility
with respect to self. By the method of teamwork activities and performing the activities

that are related to the theme of learning such as discuss, resolve the problem,
communicational skills, understand and respect the others people's opinions,.... Teachers
have the role of guiding, helping, and creating conditions for students to promote self-
control and creativity. And the students have responsible for their studies, a positive in
one's studies, more initiative.Teaching according to methods " student-centered ", with a
view to helping students raise the sense of initiative in learning, discover a potential of
the student and teachers will help students have confident and responsibility with respect
to self. By the method of teamwork activities and performing the activities that are
related to the theme of learning such as discuss, resolve the problem,... Teachers have the
role of guiding, serving as a model, helping, and creating conditions for students to
promote self-control and creativity. And the students have responsible for their studies, a
positive in one's studies, a more initiative.

2.1.4 The disadvantage of student-centered

Contrary to be many the interests of student-centered methods, it also have a number of


the disadvantage.

2.2 Teacher-centered
2.2.1 Definitions

In method of "teacher-centered" , teachers play an important role in the learning


process."teacher-centered" is still here until today, in which the role of the teacher is set
too high, the teacher decides everything in the class. The source of information from the
teacher is sole and can be imparted, whereas student acquire unconditional. Of course, the
teacher who is good at giving a lecture, easy-to-understand explanations has the ability to
a expressive and attract students, in which students can quickly acquire and remember.

2.2.2 Real situation

To innovate methods of effective teaching, teachers are the leading decisive factor in
implementing methods of innovative teaching. With the right understanding, has a sense
of responsibility and will,to be determinated to do my best, the skills to use teaching
equipment and organize to instruction in order to students learn a good, that is essential
qualities of teachers in the school. Teachers' knowledge are important characteristics in
education. Teachers with any class must respond the requirements of knowledge, ability
to teach effective ,enthusiasm and intimacy. Besides, teachers must have organizational
skills in order to guide students, have the capacity to exploit rich information of the era in
order to serve the teaching requirements. Current teachers are no longer the people impart
knowledge but assist students in searching for, selecting and tackle the information. The

teacher's position must not be defined by the monopoly with regard to the information
and class intelligence, but by his intellect and experience in leading students to self-study

2.2.3 The interests of teacher-centered

2.3 To compare between "teacher-centered" and "student-centered"

The advantages of this method are the disadvantages of the other method, therefore,
unable to say any method more than any method. To look at general, can say that student-
centered method is a strong method of quality (attractive learning, stimulating creativity
intelligence....) Teacher-centered method of is a strong method of quanlity ( the amount
of knowledge is provided very much,). The origin of this difference is due to the
difference between the two cultural traditions of the East and the West. The East incline
toward the use of student-centered whereas the West early invent and like to use of
teacher-centered method. However, at the present, many schools have switched to the
"student-centered" methods.

2.4 Discussing the problem

According to personal, I think: In order to method of "student-centered " is effective,


must cooperate from both the student and the teacher.

 On the side of teacher: Lecturers must a thorough grasp of knowledge and


speciality as well as the faculty of imparting the knowledge on subjects for students.
if professional knowledge is not a steady this is lead to students will be "sleepy", not
attractive as well as do not create a interesting for the students. Teachers must create
new working method: encourage students to teamwork, It's best to bring matter of
full suggest, instructions for how to study. After students have self-researched and
the lecturers need to conclude the problem, not in order that the problem already
mention again and then be in a state of "lonely", with no end. Lecturers must "be
innovative", take pains to acquire a the opinion of students, in order to students voice
their opinion whether it is right or wrong, students will dare in order to express one's
opinions. Schools need to apply the learning technology, technical medium in
teaching, incessantly enhance the quality of lectuer staff, improve facilities.
 On the side of teacher: Students need to enhance positive spirit, initiative, learn
knowledge oneself. When Lecturers allot a job to read textbooks, read references,
students must read. Students must always deepen think, thinking ability, always
searching for knowledge not only in books, life. Students should not rely on the
knowledge that teachers impart, because all teacher what offer, it is only suggestive

and creative, dig source of creative, students have the task of developing and search
of the new ideas. Students must "innovation". Students must erase the lazy
psychology or sitting in class always dreaming, do not pay attention to the lecture,
questions from teacher bring out questions equilateral silent. School hours will
animate more than if every question from teacher given, students is excitedly
answered. Students must a active participation in lesson, independent in think, how to
solve the problem.

Methods of teaching and learning can involve cooperation from both the teacher and
students. Thought of "learner-centered", not deny the role of the teacher that enhance the
role of the guidance of teacher promote creativity. This method is a link between the
student and the teacher together in order to improve the quality of education.

3. Conclusion

Both "teacher-centered" and "student-centered" methods have their advantages and


disadvantages, it's actually hard to say which the method is better. However, at the
present, many schools have switched to the "student-centered" methods.
