The access code from last semester is the same one you will use for this semester. If you don’t have an access
code, you can purchase it from the bookstore or the publisher.
*It is recommended that you use your Seeley A&P textbook as an additional resource for learning the lab
material.

Objectives: A detailed lab course designed to investigate the structure and function of the human endocrine, circulatory,
lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive systems. Models, activities, and dissection specimens will be
used during the course of the semester to help students develop an understanding of the anatomy and physiology of
these body systems using interactive learning.

Course Description (from 2015-2016 Catalog):


1017. FUNDAMENTALS OF ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGYLABORATORY II. 1 cr. A laboratory course to accompany
Biology 1015.Two-hour laboratory. Prerequisite: “C” or better or registration in BIOL 1015, 1016. Non-majors only.

**Please Note that the prerequisite for this course is credit or registration in Biol1015. In order to be eligible for Biology
1015 you needed to earn a “C” or better in 1014 &1016**

In order to safeguard the health and safety of students, faculty, and staff during the COVID-19 pandemic, the University

Face masks have been shown to greatly reduce the risk of the transmission of the virus when they are appropriately
constructed and worn. All face coverings, whether disposable or reusable, must
• be made with at least two layers of breathable material;
• fully cover the nose and mouth and secure under the chin;
• fit snugly but comfortably against the side of the face; and
• be secured on the face, allowing one to remain hands-free.

Federal Regulations require determination and verification of every students’ physical location while enrolled in
classes (where they are physically located while taking classes), regardless of the delivery method (on campus, online).
At the beginning of every semester and whenever physical location changes, students must update or verify their current
location through banner https://ssb-prod.ec.ulm.edu/PROD/bwgkogad.P_SelectAtypUpdate. Students should do this by
the end of the first week of classes

Attendance: Class attendance is mandatory and counts towards 5% of your overall grade. Lab instructors will adhere to
the attendance regulations outlined in the current university catalog (http://www.ulm.edu/academics/catalogs/). A student
with excessive lab absences will be reported to the dean of their college.
“Students are responsible for the effect absences have on all forms of evaluating course performance. Thus, the
student is responsible for arranging the allowed make up of any missed work” quoted from ULM’s 2010-2011 Class
attendance regulations.

Participation**: Points may be deducted from your participation grade due to the following (but not limited to):
-Arriving late, leaving early, not adhering to lab safety guidelines, disrespecting instructor, other students, or lab models
and equipment, sleeping in class, not participating in lab discussions, etc……

90-100% = A 80-89% = B 70-79% = C 60-69% = D 0-59% = F

*Your instructor may not discuss grades over e-mail or by phone (FERPA) – if you have a question about a quiz/
assignment/ practical score you must visit with your instructor during their posted office hours.

Email: Communication with students must be through their official university e-mail address
(username@warhawks.ulm.edu). The instructor reserves the right to not answer an e-mail if it is asking them to discuss
grades/performance, is poorly written (does not include your name & section in the subject line), or is of an
inappropriate tone (complaining).

Practical Examinations: Practicals consist of ordered stations with displays requiring identification of indicated model
structures/diagrams/microscope specimens/ dissections or questions related to material viewed/learned in lab. Students
will be given approximately 1 minute to answer the question(s) at each station. Students will not be able to return to a
station once they have moved to the next station. Spelling errors will result in point deductions.
If you have a university excused absence for a missed practical you may make-up the points either in the same or
a different exam format. If you miss a practical for ANY reason, you have 24 hours to notify your instructor and
schedule a make-up. If you have missed a practical for an unexcused reason – you should see the lab
coordinator as soon as possible to find out if a make-up examination will be permitted.

Quizzes: Quizzes will be at the beginning of class each week (except Practical day & following a Practical) and will cover
material from the previous week.

Note: If you are absent on the day that a lab assignment/quiz is given/or is due you may receive a zero for the
assignment. If you are late to class and miss getting or turning in a lab assignment/quiz you may receive a zero. If you
have a university accepted excused absence for a missed lab quiz you will be given an opportunity to make-up
the points (format may be different). YOU must make up the missed work within ONE WEEK of your return to
classes. Assignments submitted to the mailbox/or placed under the door of a lab instructor will NOT be graded.

Pre- & Post-Lab Assignments: You must complete the pre-lab assignments for the chapters you are covering that week
through Mastering A&P by 11:59 PM the Wednesday before class. Post-lab assignments must be completed by Monday
at 11:59 PM each week they are due. Physical assignments from your lab book may be taken up at random so you must
bring your lab book with you to class every day. Lab assignments will NOT be accepted late or extended for any
reason. It is your responsibility to keep up with the assignments.
Lab Policies:

1) You must come to lab prepared (Read the exercises and complete pre-lab assignments prior to class)
2) Vandalism will NOT be tolerated (do NOT write on the desks or use highlighters, pens, or pencils to point to the
models). Only use the pointers provided to point to something on a model.
3) No food, drinks, or tobacco products are permitted in Sandel 364.
4) ABSOLUTELY No cell phones, MP3 players and other electronic devices are to be used during lab as per
university policy. They must be OFF and stored within a bag. If caught with your phone out for any reason
during class, you will have points deducted from your assignment grades and may be asked to leave the
lab.
5) You must come to lab on time. Lab sessions meet for the entire time they are scheduled. Your lab instructor
reserves the right to mark you absent for leaving early. If a university holiday or closure prevents your lab
session from meeting – YOU are responsible for making arrangements to attend one of the posted make-
up sessions.
6) You must adhere to the safety protocol for each lab as outlined by your instructor.
7) Any injuries must be reported to your lab instructor immediately.
8) If something breaks please notify your lab instructor.
9) Disruptive and disrespectful students will be asked to leave lab and, in some cases, meet with the department
head regarding their behavior before being allowed to return to lab. (Note: talking during pre-lab lecture is
considered to be disrespectful, as is playing with a model in an inappropriate manner or complaining/presenting
with a bad attitude).

Academic Dishonesty:
Academic Dishonesty (CHEATING) will NOT BE TOLERATED. ALL lab quizzes/exams/figure labels and student guides
(if applicable) are to be completed independently. If caught cheating, students will receive a “0” grade on the assignment
in question. Students who are caught cheating multiple times will be subject to the consequences outlined in the 2010-
2011 University Catalog (p75-77).

Moodle:
By the second day of classes, you will have access to some course information; including the syllabus and some really
great external links and resources through Moodle (http://moodle.ulm.edu/). Some quizzes may be given on Moodle. You
can contact the computing center help desk if you have problems getting into Moodle (318-342-5050). The website for the

Accommodations: If you have a documented learning disability and require any type of accommodation (i.e., extra time
with tests, help taking notes, need to test in the counseling center, medical exceptions, etc.), you must bring a signed
form from the Counseling Center to one of your instructors no later than the SECOND class meeting.

PENALTIES: Please come to class prepared. If needed your instructor may apply the following penalties
- Your instructor may do random spot checks for the completion of figure labels/ student guides – incomplete or poorly
completed work may result in a deduction from your participation grade
- A pop-quiz may replace a regularly scheduled quiz or assignment at the instructor’s discretion

Emergency/Temporary Remote Instruction (for Face-To-Face and Hybrid Courses)


During the semester, class and/or campus operations might be disrupted by an emergency, such as a tornado, fire, or
pandemic. If in-person instruction becomes impossible for a period of time, the class will enter a phase of emergency
remote instruction (ERI). During this phase, instruction will take place via virtual means, either synchronously or
asynchronously. Your instructor will alert you when this happens via e-mail and will include a description of how the
course will proceed.

Technical Requirements During Temporary/ERI (for Face-To-Face Courses)


During a period of emergency/temporary remote instruction, the need for the course to continue in a virtual manner means
that you will be required to have appropriate equipment, software, and telecommunication access to allow you to
participate. This course will require that you have the following, should we have to go into ERI: Computer or smart
phone with a stable, reliable internet connection and video capabilities
COVID-19 Symptoms and Testing (for Face-To-Face and Hybrid Courses)
The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted every aspect of daily life. Returning from the nationwide shutdown in the spring
of 2020 continues to involve a phased approach within which various protocols and procedures for handling the virus and
its rates of infection are established. One aspect of this is testing and contact tracing for those individuals who develop
symptoms of COVID-19. Information on what you are required to do should you develop symptoms or test positive for
COVID-19 can be found at:

In the event that one or more individuals in a course are diagnosed with COVID-19, contact tracing will be done to
determine the potential exposure to other individuals in the class. One potential outcome of this tracing might be a
recommendation that the members of the class quarantine for a period of time. If this happens, the course will go into
emergency remote instruction during that time period.
