COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING
CE 1: FUNDAMENTALS OF SURVEYING
Course Guide
To the end users of this Course Guide
This course guide covers all the topics for the entire course subject set forth by
the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) under CMO No. 92 s. 2017, and contains
lectures, assignments, self-assessment questions and activities intended for your
learning. This course guide also contains URLs of some educational videos and slides
that will be helpful to you as you go along the course guide. You need to have internet
access to be able to watch the videos or run through the slides.
I would like to acknowledge the help and support of my fellow instructor and
classmate, Engr. John Carlo L. Ramos, who dutifully critiqued the contents and gave
inputs on this course guide.
Indeed, it is all of your instructors’ first time to write a course guide and learning
modules because we are used to offline, face to face classroom learning. I personally
appreciate any feedback from the end users of this course guide. You can contact the
author at george.palada@urs.edu.ph should you have any concerns with the course
guide or if you find any errors or copyright violations.
Course Objectives
A. General Objectives
This course subject aims to introduce the science of surveying, and its principles
and methods to Civil Engineering students that are applicable to surveying
problems.
B. Specific Objectives
1. Apply the basic surveying concepts, principles and theories on distance and
angular measurements as well as area computation.
2. Solve for distances, elevations and areas from a provided set of survey data.
3. Apply the basic surveying concepts, principles and theories on determining
horizontal and vertical distances using stadia.
4. Compute for the missing data from an incomplete traverse data.
Course Structure
This course guide consists of twenty-nine (29) Learning Modules, divided into
twelve (12) Learning Units. The structure is listed below.
Mode of Delivery
As your instructor, I will have to hold synchronous sessions with you, but it will be
used primarily for lectures and consultations. These sessions will be conducted with the
whole class via Google Meet or any other virtual platform that students can access.
If the university will provide an LMS for the faculty and students, announcements,
assignments, activities, lectures and updates will be uploaded onto the site. If not
possible, we will have our regular communication via group chat on the Messenger app.
Please be advised though that you cannot message the instructor beyond 7:00 PM.
Should you message the instructor beyond the said time, you will receive your reply the
next day. In addition, please do not expect that you will get a reply right away when you
send me a message. It is best that you communicate on the group chat rather than
sending me a private message.
This course uses strategies that will let the students to learn the course subject
the best possible way. This course guide is made for you, and is designed in a manner
that you can learn on your own. Video links and pdf files are provided for you, aside
from this course guide. Hence, you are primarily responsible for your own learning.
Assessment Strategies
The platform to be used for the assessment will be announced by the instructor.
Since synchronous/face to face sessions will be limited, the mode of assessment will
probably be all online. All assessments will have a time limit. In that case, students have
to make sure that they have a strong and reliable internet connection.
Course Requirements
1. Exercises/Plates
2. Activities and Self-Assessment Questions
3. Quizzes
4. Examinations: Preliminary, Midterm and Final Examinations
5. Other requirements that may be required by the instructor

Academic Integrity
In light of this alternative learning strategy, students are now more than ever,
expected to practice intellectual honesty and academic integrity at all times. This mean
doing your course requirements all by yourself, citing sources for your works gathered
from different sources, and taking all assessments (especially quizzes and
examinations) all by yourself. Students at all times must exercise honor and strive for
excellence by respecting intellectual property rights and must not plagiarize the work of
others.
The schedule making depends on the schedule given by the memorandum from
the university. The time allotment from the syllabus can be also a factor but the huge
factor for the scheduling is on the instructor. The instructor can give his/her schedule of
dates for submission of different requirements.
Reference Texts
The first two reference books on the list are the main text to be used for the
course subject while the rest are supplementary references. The students are
encouraged to get a copy of the main reference texts for self-study. The instructor may
give some reading tasks to give to students to further understand the lecture.
