Modals

Basic knowledge

A modal has the same form for all persons. There is no to-infinitive and no s ending in the 3rd
person singular, no -ing form and no -ed form:

He can come.
She must go.
It may rain.

After a modal verb, we use the infinitive without to (base form of the verb):

I can speak German.

In the negative they are followed by n't ou de not:

She wouldn't listen to me.

The negative form of can is cannot (can't):

John cannot (can't) read.

More about it

In reported speech, can changes into could ; may changes into might.

Shall changes into should and will changes into would:

She said she could play the piano.
He told us it might snow.
Ian told me that we should arrive soon.

Expertise

To express ability, permission and necessity in the past or the future, we use phrases having the
same meaning as corresponding modals. Be able to corresponds to can, be allowed to
corresponds to may (permission) and have (got) to corresponds to must (obligation or
necessity):

Will you be able to repair my computer?

Yesterday, the children were allowed to sit up late.
You'll have to finish this work.
