He is practicing as 'Ayurvedic Consultant' for last 27 years at the city -


Sangli , Maharashtra -India.
He has done his graduation in Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery [B.A.M&S]
and post graduate Fellowship of Faculty of Ayurvedic Medicine [F.F.A.M.] From
Tilak Ayurved Mahavidyalaya, Pune University, India, during the years 1970-
1976.
He is working as a chief editor of a comprehensive website on Ayurveda

He has authored books on various topics in Ayurveda and he is first to

Foreword
If you are one of those thousands of people who are looking for a natural, safe,
yet effective approach for a problem of ' OVERWEIGHT', welcome to the world of
AYURVEDA.

Vibrant, holistic and completely natural, Ayurveda is a system of holistic healing


more relevant in today's world than ever before.

Ayurvedic text, 'Charak samhita' has described eight 'nindya prakruties'


(undesirable constitution) according to the body constitution. Among them he has
also mentioned obesity or overweight. Obesity is described as 'Medoroga' in
Ayurveda. It is said that it is comparatively easy to help an underweight person,
rather than an overweight person. The overweight problem can be due to an
actual increase in the fat component (Meda Dhatu), or it can be due to
malfunctioning. These, accordingly, will need different approaches. In very few
cases it can be an offshoot of other metabolic disorders.

Since lifestyle, especially in terms of diet and exercise, plays a major role in the
development of overweight, it stands to reason that appropriate changes in life
style could prevent obesity. Further, the same measures can also contribute to
treatment. For prevention of obesity only dietary and life style changes are
enough, but for treatment drugs may also be necessary in addition.

Ayurvedic medicine does not need to be complicated, or difficult to


incorporate into your lifestyle. You can integrate it into your routine, as much or
as little as you are comfortable with, in the beginning. As you see results, you will
want to incorporate more and more of these ayurvedic tips for health and well-
being into your daily life.

Ayurveda doesn't promise instant results. Its approach is gentle and


comprehensive, working to correct the root cause of imbalances rather than the
surface symptoms. And it places the responsibility for your well being squarely
where it belongs, with you. But if you make that commitment to yourself, you'll be
richly rewarded, with ongoing benefits that add up gradually, day after day.

Although ayurveda has been around for 5,000 years, it's not
outdated. Its very practical, time-tested principles are perfect for today's seekers
of prevention-oriented self-care and cure.

Diet in Overweight

When we eat more food than required an adipose tissue gets added. That is
obtainable only from the food; we do not get it from the air we breathe in! Even if
we consume fifty calories of extra food daily at end of a year we can easily weigh
four pounds more. Thus the main reason for obesity is more than enough food
and almost nil exercise or even not at all!

Losing weight means losing excess fat. A pound of fat equals about 3,500
calories. To lose 1 pound a week, you would need to cut 500 calories a day or
increase fat-burning activity by 500 calories a day. A diet of at least 1,200
calories for women and 1,400 calories for men is advised, since calorie intake
that is any lower may eliminate essential nutrients and increase the risk of
nutritional deficiencies.

Diet and Regimen:

Avoid excess eating, eating during indigestion or just after taking pervious meal.

Avoid day sleeping; sleep in the night after one hour of your dinner.

Do regular exercise like brisk walking (at least), running, swimming etc. avoid
sedentary and lethargic lifestyle.

Avoid eating excess sweets. Have low fat/skim dairy products. Avoid product like
chocolates, ice creams, cheese, paneer, sugar etc.

Take non-vegetarian food like chicken, fishes, eggs, meats etc. in moderate
quantity. Avoid red meat (lamb/pork/beef) but be on white meat (chicken/fish).
Remove fat from meat & skin from chicken.

Try to minimize excess oil & ghee in cooking,Use a nonstick pan for cooking.
avoid hydrogenated vegetable oils, Instead of frying things try to consume
roasted things & change your cooking techniques a little.Grill or bake food
instead of frying.Cook vegetables without fat by steaming and boiling.

Use lowfat spreads and chutney on bread instead of butter and cheese.

Don’t consume excess alcoholic drinks or water on empty stomach.


Avoid aerated drinks and cold drinks.

Intake of fat and carbohydrates should be restricted.

Fruits and green vegetables are low calorie foods, so over weight persons should
use these more frequently.Include the green leafy vegetables, sprouted moong
beans in your salad. Salad is to be taken without any dressing . If you want relish
it, take it with lemonjuice and salt. Salad should form a major part of meals
One should avoid intake of too much salt . Salt may be a factor for increasing the
body weight.

Milk products like cheese, butter should be avoided because these are rich in fat.

Vegetables like bitter gourd (Karela), and bitter variety of drumstick are useful for
loosing weight.

Spices like dry ginger, cinnamon, black pepper etc. are good for loosing weight
and can be used in a number of ways.

Do not drink water immediately after meals. Drink it after half an hour. Try to
drink warm water.

Serve dressing and rich sauces separately so that you can minimize their intake.
Have plain bread and chapatti instead of rolls, puris and parathas.

'Honey' - Taking honey is an excellent home remedy for obesity. It mobilizes the
extra deposited fat in the body and puts it into circulation, which is utilized as
energy for normal functions. One should start with small quantity of about 10
GMs. or a tablespoonful to be taken with hot water. It is good to take it in early
morning. A teaspoonful of fresh lemon juice may also be added.

But remember this is supplimentary to diatary changes stated above.You should


give up sedentary life style and gradually increase physical exercise and mental
work.
