organization and presentation of the essay and use of grammar, punctuation, and

spelling.)

Important: Plagiarism should be below 30%.

1. What is the difference between a semi-permeable and a selectively permeable

membrane? (5pts)

Depending on their size, semipermeable membranes allow only certain particles

to pass through. On the other hand, selectively permeable membranes, from the word

itself "choose" which particles pass through and it does not rely on their size. It prevents

the passage of solutes. A restricted number of solutes can flow through it.

2. What is the importance of staying hydrated? (5pts)

Staying hydrated is a crucial factor to stay healthy. Consuming enough fluids each

day can help our body to generate more energy and to regulate body temperature. Having

hydrated body can increase energy and stabilize brain function, helps joints and muscles
work rightfully. Henceforth, drink water and stay hydrated to achieve a healthy living.

Moreover, water is essential to our body as it can help cleanse our body.

3. Explain how cell transport helps an organism maintain homeostasis. (5pts)

Cellular Homeostasis and Cellular Movement Cellular homeostasis is the process

through which cells maintain the internal conditions necessary for existence. Our bodies

create heat that keeps us warm and supports chemical processes or tiny motions of

molecules across cell membranes.

4. Discuss the effects of dehydration and electrolyte imbalance in our body. (10pts)

The effects of dehydration in our body are dry mouth, lightheadedness, weakness,

feeling nauseous and or vomiting, and etc. on the other hand, the effects of electrolyte

Imbalances are irregular heartbeat, fast heart rate, fatigue, lethargy, convulsions or

seizure and diarrhea. The aforementioned factors are very treacherous in a human body

specially the effects of electrolyte imbalances

5. Relate the significance of the structures of cellulose and starch to their respective

functions. (5pts)

6. Differentiate colloids from crystalloids. Site some examples. (5pts)

When compared to crystalloids, colloids have significantly bigger particles. Colloids have

a relatively limited vascular permeability. The plasma membrane of the cell does not allow

colloids to flow through the cell. Starch, gelatin, and gum are examples of colloids, as well

as a few more.

7. Explain the principle behind dialysis. (10pts)

A person suffering from kidney failure undergoes dialysis treatment. In this

procedure waste is filtered out of the blood. Dialysis machines use artificial membranes.

8. Explain the relevance of dehydration to a potato soaked in salted water. (5pts)

Potatoes will release water into the cup if they're exposed to a higher concentration

of salt than they're exposed to within the potato's cells. Which explains why potatoes

strips grow smaller in length and width because of shrinking of the potato cells.
