Endothermic and exothermic reactions

Aim: To find out which one is endothermic or exothermic and the reason based on
that.

Materials: barium hydroxide, ammonium chloride, calcium carbonate,

(concentrated) sulfuric acid and the temperature sensor.

Procedure:
1st Investigation:
-You first put a small amount of barium hydroxide in a beaker.
- Secondly take another beaker and add ammonium chloride.
-Thirdly take the beaker of the ammonium and add it to the beaker of barium
hydroxide.
-fourthly place the wooden block with some water under the beaker then place the
temperature sensor in the beaker.
- Then keep mixing and observe and note down what happens.
2nd Investigation:
-You first take a certain amount of calcium carbonate and put it in the beaker,
- Secondly pour some of the concentrated sulfuric acid in the beaker and place the
temperature sensor
-And observe and note what happens.

Table:
Reaction Exothermic or endothermic Reason
1 Endothermic - It had absorb the
heat and cooled the
surroundings
(temperature
decreased)
2 Exothermic - It released energy
in the form of heat(
the temperature
increased)

Conclusion :
1st Investigation- The barium hydroxide and the ammonium chloride reacted
together, it had absorbed the heat and cooled the surrounding, the temperature
decreased and the water that was on the wood block had froze turning from liquid
to solid.

2nd investigation- The sulfuric acid and the calcium carbonate reacted together and
released energy in the form of heat, the temperature increased.
