A nightshades—potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, and peppets—are some of our favorite foods. But it's true: people say they have problems with these veggies Specifically, people with rheumatoid arthritis sometimes find that nightshades| ‘rigger ther joint pain, and people suffering from migraines or fibromyalgia similarly report a worsening of symptoms. So, is this real? What do scientists say? Very litle, unfortunately. The anecdotal evidence has not been put to rigorous testing. We do know that potatoes contain solanine,a toxin the plant presumably uses to fend off predators. Solanine is more concentrated in the leaves and stems, and in any grecnish areas ofthe potato. But in ‘most potatoes so in grocery stores and farmers’ markets, the amount is usualy so small as o theoretically cause no problem, and cooking reduces it further. However, solanine may not be the culprit, Diet-elated joint symptoms are thought to be an autoimmune reaction to foreign proteins, soit could be that a protein in the potato plant isto blame. ‘What should you do? Don't wait for scientists to catch up with you.
