THE STAGES OF MORAL DEVELOPMENT

Name: Pineda, Dianne Michelle B.

This activity would require you to recall some experiences in the past where moral decisions that
you have made fit to the different stages in the moral development as discussed by Lawrence
Kohlberg.
Be guided by the following questions per level and stage of moral development.

LEVEL 1: PRECONVENTIONAL MORALITY

When you were between eight to ten years old, think of an experience that you had where a hard
lesson was learned through a punishment (Stage 1) and a lesson that led to (Stage 2).

Stage 1:
When I was a child, one of the rules in our house is by staying at home from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
Playing outside is set for 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM. What I did is I disobeyed
the rules and did go outside 3:00 PM. I was punished at that time with a slipper. My mother kept
slapping the slipper to my butt even though I am crying already. I learned that we should obey our
parents since it’s for us.

Stage 2:
It was really hard for me to understand it that time for why they are getting mad at me for playing.
But then I realized that it is for me. For me to have a whiter skin or to avoid getting lice from the
sun. I realized that I should really follow the rules that are created by my parents since it is for me.
LEVEL 2: CONVENTIONAL MORALITY
To answer Stage 3, think of an authority whose values and standards you have internalized.
Describe how these values have helped you decide on a moral issue which was readily agreed or
approved by your friends.

Stage 3:

My brothers are doing “The Feast” it’s a catholic community founded by Brother Bo Sanchez. Every
Sunday, my brother goes to the main gathering area which is in PICC. While observing what they
do there, it basically attracted me to be faithful since for me it was livelier than a church. I decided
to bring my friends to the nearest gathering area which is in SM Valenzuela Cinema. We all
enjoyed and we had so much fun and now, we are still attending to it even though it is online, we
have online livestream.

To answer Stage 4, cite laws (school policies, house rules, etc.) that you have followed and the
reason why you have to do so.
Stage 4:

We have a rule at school where we cannot dye our hair especially in catholic school. As a student, I
managed to obey the rules since it is our duty and responsibility to obey it so we can maintain the
good image for the catholic school where we study at.

LEVEL 3: POST CONVENTIONAL MORALITY

For Stage 5 & 6, think of a famous individual or personality who has fought for his/her principles.
Identify this individual, what he/she has done for others, and what principle he/she had fought for.
(Don’t mention anymore the following names: Jose Rizal, Emilio Aguinaldo, Andres Bonifacio,
Mahatma Gandhi, Pope Francis, Pope John Paul II, George Washington, Joan of Arc, Martin
Luther King Jr.)

Name of the personality: Miriam Defensor Santiago

What principle the person had fought for:

When it was during her time, it was really hard for her to run for a position in politics because she is
simply a girl. People often look down on a woman because they think that they have a lesser
capability compared to a man. But what she did was to make changes to the perspective of the
people. She showed the whole Philippines that a women can do what men can do. She entered
politics, she pursued her dream, she overcome all the men who criticized her. She did fight for what
is right for the people and the go

Describe the events that took place involving this person:

Miriam Defensor Santiago is known for fighting against corruption inside the government. She said
that corruption only exist in the society that allows it. This is her main phrase while fighting inside
the government. She exposed all the corruptions that was happening. She questioned all the
person involved. She really did everything that she can to fight for what is right. And she did
succeed. She successfully exposed the corruption and place a punishment for what they did.
