SWOT Analysis for a Consulting Firm

Consulting firms provide professional services to businesses. There is a lot of
competition among consulting firms to secure and maintain clients, and
many factors that lead a client to select one consulting firm over another.
As such, it is helpful for consulting firms to regularly assess the
marketplace and their competitiveness in the market.
. Internal factors would include processes, products, supplier relationships or
employee retention.
External factors include competitors, consumer attitudes, new technologies or
industry standards.

 Human resources - staff, volunteers, board members, target population

 Physical resources - your location, building, equipment
 Financial - grants, funding agencies, other sources of income
 Activities and processes - programs you run, systems you employ
 Past experiences - building blocks for learning and success, your reputation in
the community

Strengths: Strengths are the internal things your consulting firm does well. This can
include financial, customer, internal and growth areas that are particularly strong at
your company.

Weaknesses: Weaknesses are internal things your company can improve upon.

These also include financial, customer, internal and growth areas that can be
improved.

What Are the External Factors of a SWOT Analysis?

 Future trends in your field or the culture.

 The economy - local, national, or international.
 Funding sources - foundations, donors, legislature.
 Demographics - changes in the age, race, gender, culture of those you serve or
in your area.
 The physical environment (Is your building in a growing part of town? Is the
bus company cutting routes?)..
 Legislation (Do new federal requirements make your job harder...or easier?).
 Local, national or international events.

Opportunities: Opportunities are often external areas where you see the highest
potential for the future. Examine financial, customer, internal and growth opportunities.
Imagine the areas where you can see meaningful possibilities.

Threats: Threats are typically external factors that can damage or negatively impact
your business. It is important to give consideration to financial, customer, internal and
growth threats. Threats are often external, but sometimes threats can originate from
within a company.
SWOT analysis of management consultancy firm

 Strength:

Their core strength lies in the power of their team, workforce. They have a team that
can go all the way to give their clients value for their money. They are well positioned,
and they know will attract loads of clients from the first day they open their doors for
business.

 Weakness:

As a business consulting firm, it might take some time for our organization to break
into the market; that is perhaps their major weakness.

 Opportunities:

The opportunities in the consulting industry are massive and we are ready to take
advantage of any opportunity that comes their way. New Industries are coming with the
ease of doing business in India so training will be required and there will be further
employee development.

 Threat:

Some of the threats that they are likely going to face as a consulting firm operating in
India are unfavorable government policies, the arrival of a competitor within their
location of operations and global economic downturn which usually affects purchasing
power. There is hardly anything they could do as regards these threats other than to be
optimistic that things will continue to work for their good. Larger Competitors are there
so having to read that threat as well.

Porter's five forces of the consulting firms are:

1. Competition in the industry

High Firm Rivalry - Bigger consulting firms competing for the same Fortune 500
clients, smaller niche consulting firms pursuing business with clients in respective
verticals all lead to high competitive rivalry within groups.

2. Potential of new entrants into the industry

Low customer switching costs, low initial capital investment but the factors of an
experienced knowledgeable workforce and a success track record dictate the success of
the firms.

3. Power of suppliers

Low Power of Suppliers - This force is defined by the easy availability of MBA
graduates and experienced consultants. Other suppliers like the software product
vendors often seek integration of their products within consulting firms' suite.

4. Power of customers

High Power of Buyers - The clients of consulting companies always have an option
of in-housing experienced professionals from the market or maintaining the status quo
unless change is inevitable.

5. Threat of substitute products

Medium Threat of Substitutes - in-line with the buyer power, the threat of substitute is
relatively medium.
