The first being Nadia, the second on Irena (these

are on the textbook pages for orphan studies - see orphan studies 3 and 4 attachments
below)

Nadia is showing this behaviour as she has a disinhibited attachment type. This is due to
being institutionalised and adopted after the age of 6 months. Children adopted before 6
months rarely have a disinhibited attachment type. She shows indiscriminate friendliness,
lack of stranger anxiety and attention-seeking because she had multiple attachment figures
during her first 2 years in the orphanage. Therefore, failure to form an attachment after six
months has log-lasting effects.

Irene was adopted at the age of 2 months, usually children adopted after the age of six
months show low IQ. Therefore, Irene has the chance to ‘catch-up’ with her peers. The
family friend’s views may act as a self-fulfilling prophecy for Irene, however, this is unlikely
given the early age she was adopted and the fact that she has the chance to develop a high
quality attachment with her adoptive mother, given that she receives intellectually
stimulating activities.
