Q.1 a) What is meant by statistics? Give the important uses and limitations of
statistics.
b) Distinguish between primary and secondary data, giving examples of each.

Q.2 a) Describe the main parts of a table and its construction.


b) Draw a histogram illustrating the following data: (10+10)

Q.1 a) What do you mean by Dispersion? What are the most usual methods of
measuring dispersion?
b) The breaking strength of 20 test pieces of a certain alloy is given as under:

Calculate the average breaking strength of the alloy and the standard deviation.
Calculate the percentage of observations lying within the limits: mean  S;

Q.2 a) Differentiate between regression and correlation, giving examples.


b) The following results were obtained for a bivariate frequency distribution
after making the transformation u=x-1250/500 and v=y-500/200: n=66,
fu=-4, fu2=109, fv=-53, fv2=115, fuv=91. Calculate the coefficient
of correlation and obtain the equations of the lines of regression in the
simplest form. (10+10)

Q.3 a) Three applicants are to be selected at random out of 4 boys and 6 girls. What
is the probability of selecting (i) all girls, (ii) all boys (iii) at least one boy?
b) A marble is drawn at random from a box containing 10 red, 30 white, 20 blue
and 15 orange marbles. Find the probability that it is (1) orange or red (2) not
“red or blue” (3) not blue (4) white (5) red, white or blue. (10+10)

Q.4 a) Write a note on Sample Design and Sampling Frame.


b) Describe the general procedure for testing a hypothesis about a population
parameter. (10+10)

Q.5. a) Random samples of 500 men and 500 women are selected to determine,
whether the proportions of men and women favouring a political candidate are
different. Perform a hypothesis test at 5 percent level, if in the samples, 225
men and 275 women favour the candidate. What is implied by the test result?
b) Test the association between injection against typhoid and exemption from
attack from the following contingency table: (10+10)
