THE ROAD NOT TAKEN

-Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood

and sorry I could not travel both
and be one traveler, long I stood
and looked down one as far as i could
to where it bent in the undergrowth;

then took the other, as just as fair

and having perhaps the better claim,
because it was grassy and wanted wear;
though as for that, the passing there
had worn them really about the same,

and both that morning equally lay

in leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
and that has made all the difference.

1. What does the speaker mean by the lines "Yet knowing how way leads on
to way, I doubted if I should ever come back."?

The speaker means by the lines was that he realizes that his hopes to come
back and try the other path may be impossible. And he knows that the other
road led to another, and he could no longer take other roads since it would
take him on a different path.
2. What is the traveler's problem in stanza one?

The traveler’s problem in stanza one is he was confused on which way to go

or what path should he choose. Just like life, we chose different paths and we
are not sure which it will lead us in the future.

3. What similarities between the two roads does the traveler point out?

They are in the forest and they look the same and they also both look as if not
a lot of people have walked or have been on these roads.

4. Would you have chosen the same path as the speaker? Yes, or no?
Explain.

Yes, I would choose the same path since both just looks the same and each
would lead to a different kind of adventure. And I also want to do things
differently than the others by also choosing the speaker’s path since I think
lots of people would choose the other path because I think it looked more
promising as what the speaker had described.

5. "I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference." What
is the speaker saying here?

The speaker is saying that he took the path where not a lot of people choose
since he wants to have unique experiences which is different than other
people.

6. What are the themes in this poem?

The themes in this poem are accepting new challenges, individualism and
commitment.
INVICTUS

- William Ernest Henley

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance

I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears

Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,

How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

7. What is the central idea of the poem "Invictus" by William Ernest Henley?

The central idea of the poem is to never lose hope no matter the
circumstances, and you should be the one in control of your fate and decide
your future.

8. “In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud.” What
is the speaker saying here?

The speaker is saying here that even though life has been hard for him, he did
not allow it to penetrate his life or be a victim of the bad things that has been
happening.
9. Given the context of the poem, what does the title INVICTUS most likely
mean?

The title “Invictus” most likely means undefeated. This poem is about courage
and being strong in spite of the challenges in life.

10. Interpret the last stanza in your own terms.

The last stanza states that even though how hard life is, how it has been
badly treating you. You must never give in and never let other people decide
your future. You should be the one in charge and never let others interfere. It
is not about how hard the journey is, it is about your attitude in facing the
challenges and staying on your ground without letting someone control you or
your future.
