Activity 3

1. My pre-philosophical stance was the externalist’s stance regarding how words have
acquired meaning due to its common-sense and empirical nature. However, my
philosophical stance is subject to change since not all words can be determined
externally, but are meaningful in an internal manner like beauty, goodness, love and
more.

2. I mostly encounter disagreements in attitude and face challenges towards it since

preferences are not factual and logical, but are essentially subjective in arguments. Not all
can be persuaded to consider my preference and they would also try to persuade me with
their preference. However, I resolve these situations through a compromise and a mutual
respect of differences.

3. I mostly observe informative functions especially since most information is disseminated

through online platforms, an avenue where most youths spend their time with. It’s the
most useful function, whereas the expressive function is highly problematic. Expressive
functions sometimes use figurative language and are not direct with its meaning, causing
communication barriers and misleading relay of information.

4. A) This uses expressive function. It expresses contempt against the caste system,
explaining the government’s dislike towards the hierarchy.

B) The statement is informative. It informs about the family’s opinions on lawyers. It’s
not the speaker’s own opinion.

C) It is informative in its function. It tells that a man whose strong intention is knowing
further, never decides.

5. George Edward Moore’s Common Sense is the most coherent due to the simplicity of his
philosophy. It grounds language towards its ordinary use and his dislike towards the
absurd linguistic complications make the most sense. There is no point in complicating
something unnecessarily, especially when language is used in ordinary life.
Activity 4

“This hit me the most.”

This post is expressive in its function since it shows Sylvia being frightened in our
modernized society. Though its nature is expressive, her statement was understood and agreed
upon by majority. Her fear is personal but it also mirrors our own, rendering her message clear to
everyone.
