Background of the Study

Introduction
Eating disorders are a form of major mental illness marked by acute disruptions in eating
habits, as well as corresponding thoughts and emotions. People with eating disorders often
acquire an unhealthy obsession with food and their body composition, weight, or form (Knight,
2021). The eating disorder occurs more frequently in women, and they usually appear in
adolescence and early adulthood. Although no one grasps what causes eating disorders, they
seem to be associated with psychological and physiological difficulties along with
discouragement, stress, anxiety, emotional reactivity, and food addiction. Food obsession
becomes a technique for certain persons to acquire control over one phase of life. Even though it
may begin as overeating or refraining, the tendency can cause a big problem and take over a
person's life. Eating disorders are a significant medical issue that, if left untreated, will have
long-term health effects (Byrd, 2011).

According to the Mental Health Foundation, this study focused on the initial stages of
eating disorders to truly comprehend why individuals overcome eating disorders in the very first
place and why seeking help becomes so hard. It is intended that through researching and
understanding the early signs and processes associated with eating disorders, fewer people would
suffer the severe effects. When it comes to the early phases of an eating disorder, research has
identified factors such as emotional coping, low self-esteem, identity difficulties, and trouble
expressing emotions as crucial variables in the development of an eating disorder.
