Intro

- Very general about the world

- Elaborate in general statement (gives some detail)
- Specify the topic (paraphrase the sentence)
- Show the other side
- Give your opinion

Nobody doubts that we live in a rapidly changing time. The technology of the past is
being replaced every day, as seen in music recording, mapmaking, and many other
areas. Print media is, of course, affected by this change, and many think that paper
news sources will soon disappear. But while magazines and newspapers may become
less popular, they will probably not vanish completely.

Another example:

One of the most controversial issues in the United States is whether or not citizens
should be allowed to own guns. This topic often causes a heated discussion as people
have strong opinions supporting or opposing guns. Many people support gun
ownership because they believe every citizen should have the right to protect
themselves. However, other people argue that guns are too dangerous to be in the
hands of untrained professionals. Guns should be banned in the U.S. because they are
easily accessible to children and could increase the crime rate.
Choosing one side.
- Clear and simple opinion
- Not complicated
- It´s a communication test
- Pick the easier one

Paragraph one:
- State a reason
- Explain it if needed (2 sentences)
- Give a concrete example/detail
- Optional second example/detail (only if the first one too short), transition
(Similarly, what’s more…)
- Return to general reason

If there is a practical use for a product, then people will continue to buy it. Even though
newspapers and magazines are often unnecessary, there are times when then can be
useful, too. Many subway systems do not have mobile internet service, for example, and
so passengers read newspapers instead of using their smartphones or computers.
Similarly, many countries do not yet have widespread mobile internet access. It will be a
long time before that changes, and until then, print media will continue to be useful.
Other:

The first reason why people shouldn’t be allowed to own guns is that children could get
their hands ºon the guns and accidently hurt themselves or someone else. First of all,
parents don’t always hide their guns in a well-hidden place that is out of the reach of their
children. I children accidentally find parents’ gun, the result could be disastrous. For
example, children may thing that a gun is a toy and try to play with it as such. This could
result in then shooting and killing someone simply because they didn’t know any better.

Paragraph 2 (and 3):

- Same structure again
- General idea - Reason
- Specifics - Examples
- Return to big picture
- Reason (again)

Besides being practical, physical news sources are more enjoyable for some people.
Reading from a screen can create stress, whereas reading from paper can be quite
relaxing. Since we access internet news on the same devices we use for work and
communication, phones and computers, we are often distracted by emails, text messages,
and other responsibilities. Magazines and newspapers, meanwhile, offer an opportunity to
escape from the stress of modern technology. This makes it difficult for internet news to
totally replace print media.

Other: (Stating the opposing point of view and defend yours)

On the other hand, some hold the opinion that people should have the right to own a gun
for their protection and safety. They feel that if someone breaks into your home, you
should be able to defend yourself against the intruder. Also, in the event that you are
attacked by a wild animal such as a wolf, bear or lion, you can use a gun to kill the animal
before it kills you. However, it is important to keep in mind that many people don’t know
how to use a gun properly. They could potentially hurt themselves when trying to use a
gun if they are not well trained. Also, a gun that has not been loaded correctly could
misfire or explode.

Conclusion:
- Restate main idea (different words)
- Reference reasons or opposite opinion (optional)
- Real world result of your argument. (Your personal life, recommendation to the
reader, prediction of the future)
As long as people want print media, news companies will continue to sell it. Although new
technology might grow and physical copies might become less popular, we should not
expect them to disappear. And as a newspaper reader, I, personally, take comfort in that.

Other: (restate the thesis and main ideas of the essay)

In conclusion, there are many reasons to explain why guns should be prohibited from
private ownership throughout the U.S. As indicated above, guns can cause for an increase
in the crime rate. Also, children can accidentally obtain guns and hurt themselves or
someone else. While many people support citizen ownership, it is evident that there are
more negative effects than positive ones. In my opinion… (optional)
