The original Doogie Howser, which made a household name out of Neil Patrick
Harris, aired on ABC from 1989 to 1993. The reboot hails from sitcom vet Kourtney
Kang, who worked with Harris on the long-running CBS sitcom How I Met Your
Mother before moving on to ABC’s Fresh Off the Boat. Dayna and Jesse Bochco —
the wife and son of the late Steven Bochco, who co-created Doogie Howser — are
among the reboot’s executive producers.

Lee is best known to TV viewers of a certain age for her starring role in Disney
Channel’s Andi Mack, which ran for three seasons between 2017 and 2019. She most
recently appeared as Princess Samantha in the Disney+ original movie Secret
Society of Second-Born Royals.

Doogie Kameāloha, M.D. is among several reboots that Disney+ has in the works, WHAT WE'RE BUYING
along with Turner & Hooch (starring Josh Peck) and a Mighty Ducks sequel series
(led by Lauren Graham and original trilogy star Emilio Estevez).

Since I don’t have and don’t plan on getting the Disney Plus channel I won’t be seeing this
show. It does sound cute though.

I have Xfinity TV and Disney Channel is on that, I’m able to watch the Disney shows
there. However, I also recently subscribed to Disney Plus, so I should have access
there too.

I loved Doogie Howser and also enjoyed Peyton Elizabeth Lee on Disney Channel. This
sounds like it has potential. I’m planning to check this re-boot show.

I’m torn between thinking it would be better if he played a doctor or a complete idiot
as a role reversal. Either way, I bet he’d be open to it.

It’s been a long time since I saw Doogie Howser – probably not since the show aired, but
was his name Douglas? If so, then “Doogie” was a nickname, right? Where does her
nickname come from?

Yes, it was. Clearly, the only way she has that nickname is so they can use the show
title because they want to be lazy rather than coming up with an original show
about a clever non-white girl.
Unless ofc they go full-on Meta and the show Doogie Howser exists in the universe.
You know what makes it worse as well, with the title they have clearly landed
somewhere in the middle by not having her surname being Howser so actually it
losses a bit of the name recognition (and doesn’t even go with an immediately
obvious how to pronounce surname outside of maybe those from Hawaii). It just
doesn’t make any sense, you are either going for the cashing in on an existing
franchise or you are doing something new, going in the middle is like taking the
worst aspects of each

This show can be good if they don’t “kid it down.” A modern-day 16-year-old is so much
different than NPH’s version all those years ago. I have to admit that I’m worried about it
being on Disney+ when ‘Love, Victor’ was relegated to Hulu for being a pretty realistic view
of current teenagers.

I hate this trend of redoing shows but going all ‘woke’ with casting. While there are a
couple of cases it works most of the time it doesn’t. The trying to force diversity almost
always becomes something that weighs it down and remakes have enough baggage to
deal with anyway without that
It would be so much better if they wanted a show with a non-white female lead if they just
created something new

So a genius white teenage boy who’s a doctor isn’t pushing an agenda.. But a genius
half- asian( because tv shoes love us mixed kids and the white parents we come
with) teenage girl who’s a doctor is too woke and forcing diversity?
Right…

Nailed it. It’s okay when the genius doctor teenager is a white male. It’s too far
out of the normal if it was anything else. That’s too “woke”. Everyone knows
only white men can be geniuses.

See this is the problem with people like you. You want dismiss people
having issues about something with glib comments that basically
implies the person is a racist/misogynist
I have no problem with a show where you have a female, non-white
lead who is a genius. I have a problem with taking an existing show and
remaking it where the only motive is to score points by diversifying it.
We keep seeing it over and over again where it produces hallow inferior
versions because they have nothing of substance to drive the remake. I
would rather see a new show with such a lead that’s had thought put
into it so its actually has the ability to be compelling rather than limited
by the previous show and the laziness behind the idea

It’s forcing diversity because it’s lazy. It takes an existing property, force a way
to gender and race swap it (You can see how lazy it is when they have a
character named Lahela and somehow manage to force the nickname
‘Doogie’ on her, in the original it made sense he was called Douglas but where
is Doogie coming from with Lahela?)
I’ve said it before on these kinds of issues if the gender/race swaps happen
organically during breaking the show, look at the BSG remake as the most
perfect example where the changes weren’t ones that were on the table right
away but cam as the story was being developed because making those
changes served the story and took some of those characters that would have
been tropes into complex characters (Starbuck especially)
When you try and force diversity all you do to the writers is put up a barrier,
look at Doctor Who. Chibnall insisted on having a female doctor to take the
job, he would cast her 3 months later BUT they didn’t start writing anything
for a further 6 months. And you can see that the writers are constantly writing
around the gender swap, their way of justifying it basically comes by throwing
in a clothes joke a couple of times a season. They have also had to go out of
their way to break cannon to try and make it work thus annoying the fanbase.
When you have historical adventures they write her as a man despite the fact
she would be treated as a second class citizen. It’s just a mess and took what
was a great show into one that painful to watch. And the thing is Moffet
showed when he gender-swapped the Master that if you aren’t forcing it and
the story comes organically it can work, but ‘wokeness’ ruined the chance to
do a female regeneration of the doctor well.
And this is my problem with lazy gender/race swaps. A remake is already on
the lazy side in most cases as most really don’t elevate it above the original
BUT when you now go for the easy ‘woke points’ by forcing it you hinder the
writers even trying to elevate it and you also risk alienating the old fans
without really bringing in new fans with it. As I said it would be better to just
do something new with a non-white female lead, give everyone working on it
a blank slate rather than being pinned down by an existing property

Why not just make a full Hawaiian girl who’s a teenage doctor that stands on
it’s own? Sounds like the network/studio bias that doesn’t have much faith in
the premise if they have to piggy back off a name of another series to do so.

Doggie Howser was good because it was a straight up drama. Not sure how a comedy
version will play, especially if Disney does what they do best (laugh tracks and all)
.
They should rethink this and make it a drama like the original. Otherwise I fear the jokes
will be at the expense of the mixed race female lead, which is unacceptable.
