(First Prelim- 1st Week)

THE HISTORY OF DRUGS FROM PAST TO PRESENT.

Learning Objectives:
1. Discuss the history of drugs from past to present.
2. Differentiate the prohibition of drugs from past to present.

In 14th century, the word “DRUG’ originates from an old French word DROGUE, which
means a dry substance, then derived later into DROGE-VATE from Dutch word meaning dry
barrels where medicinal plants are stored in them.

The history of the human race has also been a history of drug use. Since the earliest times, herbs,
roots, barks, leaves and plants have been used to relieve pain and help control disease.

4,000 years ago - Opium (plant of joy) was used in early


Mesopotamian writings.
7th century - Prohibition of the use of alcohol
under Islamic Law (Sharia) where it is
the earliest recorded law in the old
world and attributed to passages in the
Quran.
1484 - Marijuana used at the time of crusades
by the Arabs as part of their religious
intolerance.
- Fiat Pope Innocent VIII banned the
use of cannabis.
1516 - In Northern Europe, the Protestants
have passed drug laws motivated by
religious prejudice.
- Reinheitsgebot which stipulates that
beer may only contain water, barley
and hops. Hence, hops can only cause
sedation and reduce libido.
- The exclusive use of hops had been
obligatory in France since 1268.
Between 1821 and 1837 - In the late Qing Imperial of China,
opium imported by the British East
India Company which vastly
consumed by all social classes in
Southern China.
- 5x increasing rate of the importation
of drugs.
May 1839 - British declared the first opium war
against China
- China Successfully destroyed all the
Opium stock of British.
- Second war, the Spanish – American
war which resulted to the inheritance
of Opium monopoly in the Philippines
by the United States.
1875 - San Francisco, California enacted an
ordinance which banned the smoking
of opium in opium dens.
- The reason for many women and
young girls, as well as young men of
decent family were being induced to
visit the Chinese opium smoking dens.
1919 - The prohibition of the use of alcohol
in Finland.
1920 - The prohibition of the use of alcohol
in US
1914-1955 - Sweden employed an alcohol
rationing system with personal liquor
ration books (“motbook”)
20th century - Cocaine was prohibited.
- Alcohol was prohibited.

This is a partial list of just few of the most ancient users of psychoactive (means having an
impact on thinking, mood, or behaviour) substance as per Sullivan and Hagen, 2002.
- 10700 A.D. - 13000 A. D.
-the Areca nut (commonly known Betel Nut was chewed in Timor and in
Thailand.
- Before European contact-
-the Aborigimes used Pituri and Nicotiana (both nicotine) and Native Americans
used also tobacco.
-Ethiopians used Khat (a flowering plant native to the Horn of Africa and Arabian
Peninsula.

- Coca was being used in the Andes and Equador.

History in the Philippines - No known drug abuse during pre-Spanish era.
