Solutions to Graded Exercise 2.

Given:

A=70 m, 30 ° E of N=70 m , 60°

B=5 0 m , 4 0 ° S of W =50 m ,220 °

C =2 0 m, S=20 m , 27 0°

D=6 0 m, E=6 0 m, 0 °

R
Required: ⃗

First, find the components of each vector.

A x = A cos 60 ° = 70 m (0.5) = 35.0 m A y =A sin 60° = 70 m (0.866) = 60.62 m

Bx =B cos 22 0 ° = 50 m (-0.766) = -38.30 m B y =B sin 220 ° = 50 m (-0.642) = -32.10 m

C x =C cos 27 0 ° = 20 m (0) = 0 C y =C sin 27 0 ° = 20 m (-1) -= -20 m

D x =D cos 0 ° = 60 m (1) = 60 m D y =D sin 0 ° = 60 m (0) = 0

Next, add all the x-components to give R x and all the y-components to give R y .

R x =A x + B x +C x + D x =56.70 m

R y = A y +B y + C y + D y =8.52m

Then, use Pythagorean Theorem to determine the magnitude of the resultant.

R=√ R x 2+ R y 2
R=57.34 m
And for direction of the resultant use:

Ry Ry −1 Ry
tanθ= θ=arctan or θ=tan θ=8.55 °
Rx Rx Rx
R =57.34 m, 8.55 ° N of E
So, ⃗
