V. Explain the characteristics of a computer.

Ans. The characteristics of a computer are:-

a) Speed- Speed refers to the amount of time taken by a computer to


perform a specific task. A computer can carry out millions of instructions
in a few seconds. Its speed is measured in Mega Hertz or Giga Hertz.

b) Accuracy – If the input and instructions given to a computer are correct,


then the result it produces will be accurate.

c) Storage- A computer can store a large amount of data. The stored data
can be easily retrieved.

d) Diligence- Being a machine, a computer does not suffer from boredom,


tiredness or lack of concentration.

e) Scientific Approach- The entire approach to solve a problem by


computers is highly scientific and based on algorithms and mathematical
logic.
f) Versatility- A computer can be made to perform many different kinds of
tasks. It can work with different data such as pictures, audio, video and so
on.

Q.1 What are punched cards?

Ans. Punched cards are paper cards containing several punched holes to
represent data. These cards store information that can be accessed by inserting
the card into the computer.
Q.2 What are the limitations of a computer?

Ans. The limitations of a computer are:-

a) Computers do not have the ability to take a decision.


b) Computers have no emotions.
c) In case of wrong input, computers will produce the wrong output.
d) Computers need instructions at every stage.
