READING:
Always Young
My aunt Jennifer is an actress. She must be at least thirty-five years
old. Inspite of this, she often appears on the stage as a young girl.
Jennifer will have to take part in a new play soon. This time, she will
be a girl of seventeen. In the play, she must appear in a bright red
dress and long black stockings. Last year in another play, she had to
wear short socks and a bright, orange-coloured dress. If anyone ever
asks her how old she is, she always answers, ‘My dear, it must be
terrible to grow up!’

COUNTABLE AND UNCOUNTABLE
NOUNS
Countable Nouns
Anything that can be counted, whether singular – a dog, a house, a friend, etc. or
plural – a few books, lots of oranges, etc. is a countable noun. The following
countable noun examples will help you to see the difference between countable and
uncountable nouns. Notice that singular verbs are used with singular countable
nouns, while plural verbs are used with plural countable nouns.
Uncountable nouns can be paired with words expressing plural concept. Using
these words can make your writing more specific. Here are some examples of how
to format interesting sentences with uncountable nouns.
• Garbage – There are nine bags of garbage on the curb.
• Water – Try to drink at least eight glasses of water each day.
• Advice – She gave me a useful piece of advice.
• Bread – Please buy a loaf of bread.
• Furniture – A couch is a piece of furniture.
• Equipment – A backhoe is an expensive piece of equipment.
• Cheese – Please bag ten slices of cheese for me.

Broken Sentences
ESL EFL Matching Activity - Elementary - 20 Minutes
In this matching activity, students put together sentences that have been broken into two halves. All
of the sentences cover phrases for talking about likes and dislikes. Each pair of students is given a set
of slips. The students are told to arrange the slips into 20 sentences about likes and dislikes. After ten
minutes, the students stop the activity and go through the answers. Pairs of students take it in turns
to read out their sentences. For each correct sentence, the students win a point. The pair with the
highest score at the end of the game wins.

ESL EFL Speaking and Writing Activity - Elementary - 30 Minutes
In this insightful teaching activity, students ask and answer questions about personal preferences.
The class is divided into pairs (A and B) and each student is given a worksheet. Students begin by
answering questions about their favourite things. The students then work in their pairs. Student A
starts by asking Student B the questions on their worksheet, e.g. What's your favourite item of
clothing? If Student B's favourite is the same, Student A scores points. When Student A has finished
asking their questions, they swap roles. When they have finished, the students repeat the task with a
new partner. At the end of the activity, the class finds out which two students are the most
compatible and share the most favourite things.

Was it you...?
ESL EFL Writing, Listening and Speaking Activity - Elementary - 35 Minutes
This is an effective activity for teaching students how to talk about their likes and dislikes. In large
groups, students complete two slips of paper. On the first slip, they write their favourite word and on
the second slip they write something they love or hate doing. Each student then writes the names of
the group member’s on a worksheet. The favourites and sentences are then read out to the group
and the students write them down next to the student who they think wrote each one. The students
find out who wrote each slip by asking each other questions. The students have to listen very
carefully as they can only ask a certain number of questions. Students get one point for each correct
answer.

I love charades
ESL EFL Miming and Speaking Activity - Pre-intermediate - 30 Minutes
This amusing miming game can be used to practice or revise a large variety of phrases for
expressing likes and dislikes, e.g. I adore..., I’m crazy about..., I can’t bear..., etc. In the activity,
students play a game of charades where they guess sentences about likes and dislikes. Each sentence
uses a different phrase for expressing preference. The class is divided into two teams (A and B).
Team A goes first and sends a player to the front of the class. The player picks up a sentence slip and
reads it. The player then has one minute to mime the sentence to his/her team. As the player is
miming, you time the student and write up any words the team calls out that are in the sentence. If
the team manages to guess the complete sentence within a minute, they win two points. If the team
doesn’t guess the complete sentence after one minute, the player continues his/her mime and both
teams try to guess the sentence. The first team to say the complete sentence wins one point. Then a
player from Team B comes to the front and so on. Teams continue taking it in turn to come up and
mime a sentence until all the sentences have been completed. The team with the most points at the
end of the game wins. If your students are quite shy, they can also play the game in pairs or small
teams.
Who is it?
ESL EFL Writing Activity - Pre-intermediate - 30 Minutes
In this creative activity, students complete descriptions about their likes, dislikes and interests and
then the class has to guess who wrote each description. Each student is given a numbered worksheet.
The students complete a description of their likes, dislikes and interests and then the worksheets are
put up around the classroom. The students read the numbered descriptions and decide which
student in the class wrote each one. The student who guesses the most correct answers wins the
game.

4. Who likes?
Students guess which person in the class is being described from their likes and dislikes. This can
be organized many ways. One is for students to write sentences on one piece of paper each
describing what they really like, don’t really like etc, to be taken in by the teacher, shuffled, and
dealt out to other people. The person who received it then reads out the sentences to the rest of
their group or the class, starting with the most difficult to guess from, until someone guesses who
it is.

There are a number of ways of making commands sound more polite. We can
add please at the end of what we say, or we can use a question form to make a
command sound more like a request, or we can use I’d like you to + infinitive
or I’d be grateful if you’d + infinitive without to:
For examples:
[a boss to an assistant]
Ask Max to sign this form and then send it off immediately please,
Gwyn.
Will you bring us the files on the Hanley case please, Maria?
I’d like you to bring us four coffees at eleven when we take a break in
the meeting.
I’d be grateful if you didn’t tell anyone about this
[a cookery class]
In speaking, we often use the present simple when we are giving instructions
and demonstrations, and we say like so meaning ‘like this’:
We can use them to tell people to do or not to do things. They usually don’t
have a subject – they are addressed to the listener or listeners, who the speaker
understands to be the subject. We use the base form of the verb:
Have fun.
Enjoy your meal.
Stop talking and open your books.
Don’t be late.
Warning:
We use the imperative carefully. It is a very direct form and we don’t
generally use it to make requests or commands or to give instructions.
Maria, don’t you try to pay for this. I invited you for lunch and I insist on
paying.
Warning:
Be careful when using subject pronouns in imperative clauses, as they can
sound very direct.
Warning:
Imperatives with let (let’s)
Warning:
Very often we use let’s (let us) when we are referring to the first person
singular (me):
B: Let’s.
Third person
Third person imperatives are not common; they are formed with let +
him/her/it or a noun phrase:
[B is joking]
A: How will Patrick know which house is ours?
B: Let him knock on all the doors until he finds ours!

Let, let’s

ASKING FOR AND GIVING PERMISSION
Asking for permission to do something takes many different forms. Perhaps you need to get
permission to do something at work, or perhaps you need to ask a friend for permission to use
one of her possessions, or maybe you need to ask the teacher if you can leave room the for a
moment or two. Remember to use polite forms when asking for permission to do something
or use an object as you are asking a favor of that person.
When you ask for permission to use something that belongs to someone else you have to do
your best to be polite. It is desirable to use the word "please."
INFORMAL
Can I ………………………? (Can he have dinner with us?)
Do you mind if I ……………..? (Do you mind if I ask you
something?)
Is it ok if I…………..? (Is it ok if I leave you with him alone?)
FORMAL
Use 'Would you mind if I...? Could I possibly...? Could you possibly...? Do you think you could...? to sound more polite.
Remember that 'Do you mind...?' and 'Would you mind...?' mean 'Is it a problem for you?' so the polite answer when we
'say yes' is 'No'.
Dialogue:
Liza, is asking her friend for permission to do different
activities...
Liza: Peter, can I use the computer?
Peter: Sorry, you can't. It is out of order.
Liza: May I use the meeting room for two hours this
afternoon?
Peter: Sure! But make sure you finish before 4pm. It
will be used for a meeting

DAD’S BIRTHDAY
Here is an enjoyable lesson for pre-intermediate students. In the lesson, students practice making suggestions
for a birthday present. Students also learn how to reject and accept suggestions. Students begin the lesson by
naming pictures of presents. Then, students answer some questions that get them to share their ideas and
opinions about the presents. After that, they complete a dialogue about two people who are making suggestions
for their father's birthday present. The students identify the phrases for making, rejecting and agreeing to
suggestions from the dialogue. Then, in pairs, the students answer some comprehension questions. Finally, the
students work together to create a conversation about buying a friend a birthday present. The students then
act out their dialogues to the class.
Making Suggestions
ESL EFL Writing and Speaking Activity - Pre-intermediate - 30 Minutes
Here is a comprehensive activity that gives students practice at solving problems by making, accepting and
rejecting suggestions. Each student is given a copy of the worksheet. Students begin by identifying phrases for
making, accepting and rejecting suggestions from a set of sentences on their worksheet. After that, the students
practice using the phrases for accepting and rejecting in pairs. Then, students change partner and practice
making their own suggestions and giving reasons when refusing suggestions. Finally, the class is divided into
small groups. Students take it in turns to read problems and then as a group they make suggestions and decide
on the best solution for each problem. When all of the groups have finished, each group tells the class what they
decided and why.

A dialogue between two friends making
plans for the weekend
What is the conversation 2 friends making plans about?
Laurie and Christie are both friends and are having a conversation about what to do at the
weekend. They plan to go to the movies have something to eat and then go shopping.
Laurie: That sounds like a good idea. Maybe we should go out to eat beforehand.
Christie: Let’s meet at Summer Pizza House. I have not gone there for a long time.
Laurie: Good idea again. I heard they just came up with a new pizza. It should be good
because Summer Pizza House always has the best pizza in town.
Laurie: Why don’t we go to the 2:00PM show? We can meet at Summer Pizza House at
noon. That will give us plenty of time to enjoy our pizza.
Sarah: My cousin Karen is in town. Can I bring her along? I hate to leave her home alone.
Christie: Karen is in town? Yes, bring her along. Laurie, you remember Karen? We met her
at Sara’s high school graduation party two years ago.
Laurie: I do not quite remember her. What does she look like?
Sarah: She has blond hair, she is kind of slender, and she is about your height.
Sarah: Yes, and she was playing the piano off and on during the party.
Laurie: I remember her now. Yes, do bring her along Sara. She is such a nice person, and
funny too.
Sarah: She will be happy to meet both of you again.
Sarah: She graduated last June, and she will start her teaching career next week when the
new school term begins.
Sarah: She will teach kindergarten. She loves working with kids, and she always has such a
good rapport with them.
Christie: Kindergarten? She must be a very patient person. I always think kindergarten is the
most difficult class to teach. Most of the kids have never been to school, and they have never
been away from mommy for long.
Sarah: I think Karen will do fine. She knows how to handle young children.
Laurie: I think the first few weeks will be tough. However, once the routine is set, it should
not be too difficult to teach kindergarten.
Christie: You are right. The kids might even look forward to going to school since they have
so many friends to play with.
Sarah: There are so many new things for them to do at school too. They do a lot of crafts in
kindergarten. I am always amazed by the things kindergarten teachers do.
Laurie: Yes, I have seen my niece come home with so many neat stuff.
Christie: Maybe we can ask Karen to show us some of the things that we can do for
this Halloween.
Laurie: Maybe we can stop by the craft store after the movie. What do you think, Sara?
Sarah: I will talk to her. I think she will like that. It will help her with school projects
when Halloween comes.
Christie: Michael’s is a good store for crafts. It always carries a variety of things, and you
can find almost anything there.
Laurie: There is a Michaels store not far away from Cinemax 26. I believe it is just around
the corner, on Pioneer Avenue. We can even walk over there.
Sarah: So, we plan to meet for pizza at noon, go to the movies at two, and shop at Michael’s
afterward. Right?
Christie: Yes.
