How To Start A Conversation In English

Do you have difficulty speaking English? Sometimes the hardest part is simply
starting a conversation. Learn these expressions for starting a conversation in
English in any situation – formal or informal, at work, school, or other
contexts!

STARTING A CONVERSATION WITH A FRIEND:

With friends, you can use informal English expressions like these:

 What’s up?
 How’s it going?
 The correct answer to “What’s up?” is “Not much.” You can then add a
detail about what’s happening in your life at the moment. If someone says
“How’s it going?” you can answer “Good” or “Not so good” and then say
why.

STARTING A CONVERSATION WITH A COLLEAGUE:

In the office, you use slightly more formal English, such as these common
expressions:

 Hi, John. How are you doing?

 How’s your day going?
 We’re sure having a busy/slow day today.
 Have you heard the news about ________?
 (on Friday): Have you got any plans for the weekend?
 (on Monday): How was your weekend?
 You can talk about projects you’re working on, or about hobbies you
have outside work. Current national and international news is also a good
topic of conversation.
STARTING A CONVERSATION WITH A FRIEND WHO YOU
HAVEN’T SEEN IN A LONG TIME:
Here are some common expressions to start a conversation with someone you
see after a long separation:

 Hi Paula! How have you been?

 Long time no see!
 So, what have you been up to lately?
 How’s your family?
 Are you still working at ABC Company?
In this case, you ca ask about news in your friend’s work, study, family, and hobbies.
The friend will probably ask you about recent developments in your own life, too.

STARTING A CONVERSATION AT A PARTY OR WEDDING:

 I don’t think we’ve met – I’m Shayna.
 Are you from New York?
 So, how do you know Mary?
 Have you tried the chocolate cake? It’s delicious!
If you’re at a party or wedding, you can start a conversation by asking how the
person knows the host of the party (or the people getting married). You can also
comment about the food and drinks, or about the music.

STARTING A CONVERSATION AT A CONFERENCE OR WORK

EVENT:
 I don’t think we’ve met – I’m Shayna.
 So, where are you from?
 What did you think of the speaker?
 That was an excellent workshop – I learned a lot. How about you?
The expression “I don’t think we’ve met” can be used in professional situations too.
You can ask about the person’s job, what company they are from, and their opinions
about the conference events.

STARTING A CONVERSATION WITH SOMEONE YOU HAVE JUST

BEEN INTRODUCED TO:
 Nice to meet you!
 How do you two know each other?
 So, what do you do for a living? (= what is your job?)
 What are you studying?
 How long have you been (a journalist / doing yoga / interested in music)?
 How did you get into it?
Imagine you have a friend, Nora, who introduces you to her friend Ryan. You can ask
about how they know each other, and about Ryan’s job. If Nora says Ryan is a
student, you can ask about his area of study and what year of college he’s in. If Nora
introduces Ryan as a journalist, or a friend from yoga class, or a musician, you can
ask about how long he has done that activity, or how he first got interested in it. His
answer will then provide material to continue the conversation.

STARTING A CONVERSATION WITH SOMEONE YOU MEET

OUTSIDE:
 It’s a beautiful day, isn’t it?
 It looks like it’s going to rain/snow.
 Can you believe all this rain/snow we’ve been having?
 Sure is a hot/cold one today!
 Your dog is so cute! What’s his name?
If you’re in a park, on the street, etc., the most common way to start a conversation is
by talking about the weather.

STARTING A CONVERSATION WITH A STRANGER IN OTHER

SITUATIONS:
 The secret to starting a conversation with someone you don’t know is
to make a comment about the current social context. Here are a few
examples of how to do this:
 At an art gallery: “That’s an interesting painting. What do you think of
it?”
 At a bar: “This is a great song – I love Latin music. How about you?”
 At a sports game: “Wow, that was a great play! So, who’s your favorite
player?”
 At a cafe:  “Boy, do I need a coffee!”
 At a concert or event: “What a great turnout! Have you ever been here
before?”
 At a playground: “My kids are sure full of energy today!
As in the example of the cafe and playground, you don’t need to ask a direct question.
You can simply make a comment to the other person, and this is like an invitation for
the other person to comment, too. This can then begin a conversation.

READING:

Always Young
My aunt Jennifer is an actress. She must be at least thirty-five years
old. Inspite of this, she often appears on the stage as a young girl.
Jennifer will have to take part in a new play soon. This time, she will
be a girl of seventeen. In the play, she must appear in a bright red
dress and long black stockings. Last year in another play, she had to
wear short socks and a bright, orange-coloured dress. If anyone ever
asks her how old she is, she always answers, ‘My dear, it must be
terrible to grow up!’

Make creative questions based on the above paragraph:

Example:

1. What does the writer’s aunt do?

ESL EFL Miming and Speaking Activity - Pre-intermediate - 30 Minutes
This amusing miming game can be used to practice or revise a large variety of phrases for
expressing likes and dislikes, e.g. I adore..., I’m crazy about..., I can’t bear..., etc. In the activity,

reads it. The player then has one minute to mime the sentence to his/her team. As the player is
miming, you time the student and write up any words the team calls out that are in the sentence. If
the team manages to guess the complete sentence within a minute, they win two points. If the team
doesn’t guess the complete sentence after one minute, the player continues his/her mime and both
teams try to guess the sentence. The first team to say the complete sentence wins one point. Then a
player from Team B comes to the front and so on. Teams continue taking it in turn to come up and
mime a sentence until all the sentences have been completed. The team with the most points at the
end of the game wins. If your students are quite shy, they can also play the game in pairs or small

The same language and cards as are used for Likes and Dislikes Mimes above can be used if the
students make drawing on the board or in their notebooks that represent the whole sentences.

3. The likes and dislikes ladder game

Write a succession of likes and dislikes expressions on the board, starting from the most negative
at the bottom, e.g. “really hate” or “(utterly) detest”, and getting more positive as they go up until
they finish with a really positive one at the top, e.g. “adore” or “love”. Between 5 and 8
expressions usually works best. Draw a ladder next to the expressions, with one rung for each
expression. Start with a magnet or drawing of a person climbing the ladder at the bottom. To
reach the first rung, students must ask you a question to which your true answer is the expression
written there, e.g. “How do you feel about grey skies/ Manchester United/ cockroaches?” They
then have to ask questions to get each answer in succession until they reach the top. Any time
they get an answer that is not written directly above their present position, the magnet or drawing
“falls” back to the bottom of the ladder and has to start again. They can, however, just ask exactly
the same questions again if they like (and can remember them). When they have successfully
reached the top of the ladder, students can play the same game in pairs.

4. Who likes?
Students guess which person in the class is being described from their likes and dislikes. This can
be organized many ways. One is for students to write sentences on one piece of paper each
describing what they really like, don’t really like etc, to be taken in by the teacher, shuffled, and
dealt out to other people. The person who received it then reads out the sentences to the rest of
their group or the class, starting with the most difficult to guess from, until someone guesses who
it is.

5. Which celebrity likes?

In a similar way to Who Likes above, students listen to each other and guess the famous person
from their likes and dislikes. The research for this can be done by the teacher or the students, or
they can just use their imagination about the person they are writing or speaking about.

6. Chain writing likes and dislikes blind date

Each student is given a copy of a worksheet that represents a letter from someone that is
interested in meeting for a blind date, with lots of sentence starters about likes and dislikes, e.g. “I
split up from my last boyfriend/ girlfriend because he/ she didn’t like ….” or “Most people think
it is strange that I love …., but I can’t get enough of it.” They fill in the first gap, fold the paper so
that sentence they completed can’t be seen, then pass it along to the next person. Repeat for each
gapped sentence until the whole letter is finished. After it is passed one more time, students can
open the letters, read them and decide if the letters make sense, who is the best person to date or
which of the people writing would match well with each other.

7. Graded reader blind date

This game uses the blind date idea to bring some self-study materials into the classroom. Each
student is given a graded reader and gets an idea about it from reading the back of the book and
the first couple of pages. Working in groups of 3 to 6 students, students work together to find the
best match between the interests of each person and the books they have been given, without
showing the books to each other. This can also be played after people have finished reading the
whole book.

8. Holidays blind date

The blind date idea can also be used for talking about holidays. In the more controlled version,
students are given details about one holiday each and try to find the best match for each one in
their group without showing them to each other, similar to Graded Reader Blind Date above. In
the more creative version, students guess what kinds of things will be most popular with a
particular student or students in generally and try to design a holiday to suit them, perhaps within
a certain price limit.

9. Language learning blind date

In this variation on the blind date game, students try to match different ways of learning
languages, e.g. blogging in English or singing karaoke in English, with people in their group. As
with Holidays Blind Date above, a more creative version is for them to design language learning
packages that they think will be popular and then ask questions to choose which of the other
groups’ ideas would most suit them.

10. Likes and dislikes same and different

Students have 5 minutes to find as many similarities in their likes and dislikes with their partner
as possible, e.g. “I like ice cream. And you?” “I like ice cream too. One point.” After finding out
which pair in the class had most similarities, you can play the same game again but with people
trying to find things that are different with a new partner. This can also be played as a mingling
game.

11. Likes and dislikes unique mingle game

Another mingling game that can be played with this language is trying to find one like or dislike
that is unique to you in the whole class, e.g. asking every person as you walk round if they also
hate the smell of roses until you find someone who has the same feelings about what you are
asking about, in which case you should choose a new thing to ask about and start again, or you
find that you are unique and you can sit down.

12. Likes and dislikes find how many who/ questionnaires

Another nice mingling game is for students to make predictions about how many people in the
class like, really dislike etc. various things and then go around asking questions to check.

13. Which one do I like?

This is similar to the Japanese game show where celebrities have to pretend to like foods they
hate. Students tell the class three things they like, love, hate etc, e.g. “I hate dogs, tomatoes and
the colour blue”. One of those things should be untrue. The other students ask them questions
until they can guess which one isn’t true, e.g. “Why do you hate all dogs?”, “Do you like
ketchup?” or “Do you eat pizza without tomatoes?” The person answering can continue to lie in
their answers about the one thing that is false.

14. I like everything

This is like an easier version of Which One Do I Like? above. Students are asked “Do you like
spiders/ sky diving/ maths homework etc?” and must answer “Yes” to every question, whether it
is true or not. The other students then ask additional questions and try to work out from the
believability of their answers, body language etc whether they are lying or not.

15. Likes and dislikes Mastermind

One student tells the others one thing they hate, one thing they dislike, one thing they don’t mind,
one thing they like and one thing they love, but with the things not in that order and without
telling them which one is which, e.g. “History, washing up, people who sniff, hot weather, lilac”.
The other students guess which one is which, e.g. “You hate people who sniff. You dislike
washing up. You don’t mind history. You dislike lilac. You hate hot weather.” The person whose
likes and dislikes they are talking about should only respond with “None/ one/ two/ three/ four/
five correct”. They then try again and again with only the same hint each time on how many they
have correct until they get all five right. This can also be played with more or fewer (between
three and six) likes and dislikes expressions.

Giving instructions - Sequencing
You often see the imperative form in instruction manuals or when someone tells
you how to do something.
There are often "sequencing" words to show the steps in the process. For
example, "firstly", "secondly" and "finally".

Simple instructions to replace a light bulb

Firstly, turn off the electricity.

Secondly, remove the light bulb.
Then, screw in the new light bulb.
Finally, turn the electricity on and switch on the light.

You can also say "after that" instead of "then" and "first" /
"second" instead of "firstly" and "secondly".

There are a number of ways of making commands sound more polite. We can
add please at the end of what we say, or we can use a question form to make a
command sound more like a request, or we can use I’d like you to + infinitive
or I’d be grateful if you’d + infinitive without to:

For examples:

[a boss to an assistant]

 Ask Max to sign this form and then send it off immediately please,
Gwyn.
 Will you bring us the files on the Hanley case please, Maria?
 I’d like you to bring us four coffees at eleven when we take a break in
the meeting.
 I’d be grateful if you didn’t tell anyone about this

[a cookery class]

 Beat four eggs, like this. T

 Then add the flour gradually.
 Don’t beat the eggs too much though.

[instructions on how to replace a missing button]

 Thread your needle with a piece of thread about 25 cm long.
 Mark the spot where you want the button.
 Insert the needle from the back of the fabric and bring it through …

In speaking, we often use the present simple when we are giving instructions
and demonstrations, and we say like so meaning ‘like this’:

 You fold the A4 piece of paper like so.

 Then you glue some shapes onto this side and sprinkle some glitter on
it like so.

Imperative clauses (Be quiet!)

We use imperative clauses when we want to tell someone to do something
(most commonly for advice, suggestions, requests, commands, orders or
instructions).

We can use them to tell people to do or not to do things. They usually don’t
have a subject – they are addressed to the listener or listeners, who the speaker
understands to be the subject. We use the base form of the verb:

 Have  fun.
 Enjoy  your meal.
 Stop  talking and open  your books.
 Don’t be late.

Warning:
We use the imperative carefully. It is a very direct form and we don’t
generally use it to make requests or commands or to give instructions.

We can use just, please or if you wouldn’t mind to make an imperative sound

less direct:

 Open the window a little more, please, if you wouldn’t mind.

 Not: Open the window. (too direct)
[Two friends]
A: Ann, are you ready?
B: Just give me a minute, please.
_______________________________________________________________
_______________________
Imperatives with subject pronouns

For emphasis, we can use you in an imperative clause:

[a student and a teacher]

A: Can I leave the room?
B: No. You stay here.
In negative imperatives of this type, you comes after don’t:

Maria, don’t you try to pay for this. I invited you for lunch and I insist on
paying.

Warning:
Be careful when using subject pronouns in imperative clauses, as they can
sound very direct.

We can also use words like someone, somebody, no one, nobody,

everyone, everybody, especially in speaking:

 Somebody call a doctor. Quick!

 Everybody sit down, please.
_____________________________________________________
Imperatives with do

Warning:

When we use the emphatic do auxiliary, it makes an imperative sound more

polite and more formal:

[at the beginning of a meal]

 Do start. (formal)
 Do sit down and make yourself comfortable.

We can use emphatic do in short answers without a main verb:

A: Can I use your phone to call a taxi?
B: Do, of course, by all means. It’s there on the desk.

Imperatives with let (let’s)

We use let to form first person and third person imperatives.

First person

 Let me see. What should I do?

 Let’s start at nine-thirty tomorrow, please. Okay?

Warning:

In more formal contexts, we use the full form let us:

[at the beginning of a meeting]

 Let us begin by welcoming our new members.

 We can use emphatic do with let’s in formal contexts:
 Do let’s try to be more environmentally friendly.

Very often we use let’s (let us) when we are referring to the first person
singular (me):

 I can’t find my keys. Let’s see, where did I last have them? (or Let

me see, …)

We can use let’s on its own in short responses, meaning ‘yes’, when we

respond to a suggestion:
A: Shall we stop now and have a coffee break?

B: Let’s.
Third person

Third person imperatives are not common; they are formed with let +
him/her/it or a noun phrase:

[B is joking]
A: How will Patrick know which house is ours?
B: Let him knock on all the doors until he finds ours!

 Let, let’s
______________________________________________________________

Negative imperatives

To make negative imperatives, we use the auxiliary do + not + the infinitive

without to. The full form do not, is rather formal. In speaking, we usually
use don’t:

[a public notice]

 Do not use the lift in the event of fire.

 Don’t tell anyone that I was here.

We can use don’t on its own in short responses:

A: Shall I show everyone the old photo of you?

B: No, don’t. It’s terrible!
_______________________________________________________________
________________________

Negative imperatives with subject pronoun

We can use emphatic pronoun you or anyone/anybody after don’t in negative

imperatives, especially in informal speaking:

 Don’t you worry. Everything will be okay.

 It’s a surprise party so don’t anybody mention it to Jim.

Negative imperative of let’s

We often use the phrase let’s not:

 Let’s not forget to lock the door!

We sometimes use don’t let’s in more formal contexts:

 Don’t let’s mention anything about her husband. I think they’ve split

up.

Question tags commonly used after imperatives

We sometimes use question tags with imperatives. They make the imperative
less direct:
Turn on the light, will you?
 Ask him, can you?
 Won’t you? adds more emphasis to the imperative:
 Write to me, won’t you?
 The tag after a negative imperative is normally will you:
 Don’t tell anyone, will you?

 Don’t be afraid to ask if you want anything.

Things to remember about making a request:

1. "Would you mind..." is followed by a gerund (verb+ing)

Example: "Would you mind lending me your book? "

2. The response to the following request:

is either

 "No, I don't mind."

(which is a positive response to the request. It means that I accept

to lend you my book). Or

 "Yes."

(which is a negative response to the request. It means that I don't

want to lend you my book.)
3. Could is more polite than can.

Asking others to do things – making requests

Asking Saying Yes Saying No
Can you...? Yes, sure. Well, I'm afraid + reason
Could you...?
Is it all right if you...?
Yes, of course. Well, the problem is
Do you think you could...?
Certainly. Sorry, but...
Will you...?
Would you...?

Do you mind -ing...? No, not at all.

Would you mind -ing...? Of course not.

Use 'Would you mind if I...? Could I possibly...? Could you possibly...? Do you think you could...? to sound more polite.

Remember that 'Do you mind...?' and 'Would you mind...?' mean 'Is it a problem for you?' so the polite answer when we
'say yes' is 'No'.

MAKING OFFERS

How to make offers in English?

It is common that English speakers make offers in conversations in order to be

polite and helpful. When they do so they use these expressions:

Can I… ?
Shall I… ?
Would you like … ?
Would you like me to…?
How about ...?

OFFERING TO DO SOMETHING FOR ANOTHER PERSON
You can make an offer using a phrase like:
Can I… ?
Shall I… ?
Would you like me to… ?

For example:

"Can I help you?"

"Shall I open the window for you?"
"Would you like another coffee?"
"Would you like me to answer the phone?"
"I'll do the photocopying, if you like."

Shall, can and will are followed by the verb without to.

Shall is particularly British English and is more formal than can. Would you

like… is followed either by a noun, or by an object pronoun and the verb with to.
Responding to offers

These English dialogues show you ways to accept or reject offers made to you.

"Can I help you?"

"Yes please. I'd like to know what time the train leaves."

"Can I help you?"

"No thanks, I'm just looking." (In a shop.)

"Shall I open the window for you?"

"Yes please. That would be very kind of you."

"Would you like another coffee?"

"No thanks." Or, "No thank you."

"Would you like another coffee?"

"Yes please, that would be lovely." Or, "Yes please, I'd love one."

"Would you like me to answer the phone?"

"If you wouldn't mind." Or, "If you could."
(Don't answer "Yes, I would", as this sounds like you expect someone to do it for
you.)

"I'll do the photocopying, if you like."

"It's OK, I can do it." Or, "Don't worry, I'll do it.

"Or, "Thank you, that would be great."

Making Requests and Offers

In addition, we will learn how to gracefully decline a request or offer.

The basic language structure for requests and offers as well as for acceptance or
rejection of the offer or request are as follow :

Making Offers and Requests

Offering: formal* Requesting: formal
Would you like . . . [me] to calculate the costs
May I . . .
for the project?
Shall I . . . ask them to come in? Would you mind if . . .
May I . . . get you another coffee? Would it be possible . . .
Offering: informal Requesting: informal
How about . . . getting together after the
Can I . . .
meeting?
Do you want . . . another opinion? Would you . . .
Can I . . . get you some more coffee?
Accepting Offers
Yes, please Please! (less formal)
Yes, that’s kind of you You bet! (less formal)
Yes, that would be very nice That sounds great! (less formal)
Rejecting Offers**
No, thank you. I’m fine, thank you.
That’s very kind, but no, thank you No thank you, I’m fine.
Accepting Requests
Of course! Certainly.
Yes, that’s no problem at all. No problem! (informal)
Refusing Requests**
I’m sorry, that’s not possible. I’m afraid not.
I’m sorry, I can’t.
* of course, until we know someone well, language in the business environment should remain formal
** when refusing an offer or request it is always more polite to give a short simple reason.  If your reason is
too long and detailed, people may not believe it.

Dialog Practice:
Work with a partner and create short dialogs from the table above.  Make requests and offers and accept
and reject them.  Remember to play the role on both sides of the dialog.

ASKING FOR AND GIVING PERMISSION
Asking for permission to do something takes many different forms. Perhaps you need to get
permission to do something at work, or perhaps you need to ask a friend for permission to use
one of her possessions, or maybe you need to ask the teacher if you can leave room the for a
moment or two. Remember to use polite forms when asking for permission to do something
or use an object as you are asking a favor of that person.

When you ask for permission to use something that belongs to someone else you have to do
your best to be polite. It is desirable to use the word "please."

Asking for Permission:

INFORMAL
 Can I ………………………? (Can he have dinner with us?)
 Do you mind if I ……………..? (Do you mind if I ask you
something?)
 Is it ok if I…………..? (Is it ok if I leave you with him alone?)

NOTE: The use of "Can I do something?" is very informal, and considered

incorrect by many. However, it is used in everyday informal speech and for that
reason has been included.

FORMAL

 May I_________, please? (May I have your contact number,

please?)
 Would you mind if ________? (Would you mind if I I asked you
something?)
 Would it be all right if I_____? (Would it be all right if I stay overnight
here?)
NOTE: Traditionally, the use of "May I do something?" has been used for asking
permission. In modern society, This form has become a little more formal and is
often replaced with other forms such as "Can I..." and "Could I ..." Many argue
that "Can I ..." is incorrect because it refers to ability.

Giving Permission: Refusing to give

permission:
 Yes, please do. No, please don’t
 Sure, go ahead. I’m sorry, but that’s not possible.
 Sure. I'm afraid, but you can't.
 No Problem
 Please feel free.

Asking Saying Yes Saying No

Can I...? Yes, sure Well, I'm afraid...+ reason

Could I...?
Could I possibly...? Yes, of course.
Is it all right if I...? Yes, that's fine. Well, the problem is...
Certainly.
Do you think I could...?

No, not at all.

Do you mind if I...? Sorry, but...
No, of course not.

WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST?

Here is a supplementary worksheet to help students practice making suggestions. Each student is given a copy
of the worksheet. Students begin by looking at the grammar rules associated with Let's..., Why don't you/we...,
How about... and What about... Then students read each statement on their worksheet, look at the picture, and
complete the suggestion.

DAD’S BIRTHDAY
Here is an enjoyable lesson for pre-intermediate students. In the lesson, students practice making suggestions
for a birthday present. Students also learn how to reject and accept suggestions. Students begin the lesson by
naming pictures of presents. Then, students answer some questions that get them to share their ideas and
opinions about the presents. After that, they complete a dialogue about two people who are making suggestions
for their father's birthday present. The students identify the phrases for making, rejecting and agreeing to
suggestions from the dialogue. Then, in pairs, the students answer some comprehension questions. Finally, the
students work together to create a conversation about buying a friend a birthday present. The students then
act out their dialogues to the class.
Making Suggestions
ESL EFL Writing and Speaking Activity - Pre-intermediate - 30 Minutes
Here is a comprehensive activity that gives students practice at solving problems by making, accepting and
rejecting suggestions. Each student is given a copy of the worksheet. Students begin by identifying phrases for
making, accepting and rejecting suggestions from a set of sentences on their worksheet. After that, the students
practice using the phrases for accepting and rejecting in pairs. Then, students change partner and practice
making their own suggestions and giving reasons when refusing suggestions. Finally, the class is divided into
small groups. Students take it in turns to read problems and then as a group they make suggestions and decide
on the best solution for each problem. When all of the groups have finished, each group tells the class what they
decided and why.

A dialogue between two friends making
plans for the weekend
What is the conversation 2 friends making plans about?

Laurie and Christie are both friends and are having a conversation about what to do at the
weekend. They plan to go to the movies have something to eat and then go shopping.

A conversation between 2 friends

Laurie: So, what are your plans for this weekend?

Christie: I don’t know. Do you want to get together or something?

Sarah: How about going to see a movie? Cinemax 26 on Carson Boulevard is

showing Enchanted.

Laurie: That sounds like a good idea. Maybe we should go out to eat beforehand.

Sarah: It is fine with me. Where do you want to meet?

Christie: Let’s meet at Summer Pizza House. I have not gone there for a long time.

Laurie: Good idea again. I heard they just came up with a new pizza. It should be good
because Summer Pizza House always has the best pizza in town.

Sarah: When should we meet?

Christie: Well, the movie is shown at 2:00PM, 4:00PM, 6:00PM and 8:00PM.

Laurie: Why don’t we go to the 2:00PM show? We can meet at Summer Pizza House at
noon. That will give us plenty of time to enjoy our pizza.

Sarah: My cousin Karen is in town. Can I bring her along? I hate to leave her home alone.

Christie: Karen is in town? Yes, bring her along. Laurie, you remember Karen? We met her
at Sara’s high school graduation party two years ago.

Laurie: I do not quite remember her. What does she look like?

Sarah: She has blond hair, she is kind of slender, and she is about your height.

Laurie: She wears eyeglasses, right?

Sarah: Yes, and she was playing the piano off and on during the party.

Laurie: I remember her now. Yes, do bring her along Sara. She is such a nice person, and
funny too.
Sarah: She will be happy to meet both of you again.

Christie: What is she doing these days?

Sarah: She graduated last June, and she will start her teaching career next week when the
new school term begins.

Laurie: What grade is she going to teach?

Sarah: She will teach kindergarten. She loves working with kids, and she always has such a
good rapport with them.

Christie: Kindergarten? She must be a very patient person. I always think kindergarten is the
most difficult class to teach. Most of the kids have never been to school, and they have never
been away from mommy for long.

Sarah:  I think Karen will do fine. She knows how to handle young children.

Laurie: I think the first few weeks will be tough. However, once the routine is set, it should
not be too difficult to teach kindergarten.

Christie: You are right. The kids might even look forward to going to school since they have
so many friends to play with.

Sarah: There are so many new things for them to do at school too. They do a lot of crafts in
kindergarten. I am always amazed by the things kindergarten teachers do.

Laurie: Yes, I have seen my niece come home with so many neat stuff.

Christie: Maybe we can ask Karen to show us some of the things that we can do for
this Halloween.

Laurie: Maybe we can stop by the craft store after the movie. What do you think, Sara?

Sarah: I will talk to her. I think she will like that. It will help her with school projects
when Halloween comes.

Christie: Michael’s is a good store for crafts. It always carries a variety of things, and you
can find almost anything there.

Laurie: There is a Michaels store not far away from Cinemax 26. I believe it is just around
the corner, on Pioneer Avenue. We can even walk over there.

Sarah: So, we plan to meet for pizza at noon, go to the movies at two, and shop at Michael’s
afterward. Right?

Christie: Yes.
