that uses electricity to work. Some appliance appliances use mains electricity so battery need to be plugged into a socket in the mains electricity wall. The socket has holes that allow the plug on the electrical appliances to be connected into mains electricity. Some appliances use electricity from a battery. Some appliances can use both. Mains electricity and batteries are called an electrical supply.
Sorting electrical appliances
You will need: sticky notes and catalogues or magazines to cut up 1 Try to identify an electrical appliance for every letter of the alphabet, and record each one on a separate sticky note. You have 10 minutes to get as many letters as possible completed. 2 Compare with the other groups in the class to see which group has found appliances for the most letters. 3 Use catalogues, household magazines, and the internet if available, to try to find an appliance for any letters that no group has managed to find one for. 4 Sort images of appliances from catalogues and magazines into those that use mains electricity, those that use batteries and those that can use either.
2 Electricity
We say something is manual if it is
done by hand. Manual objects do not use electricity to work. A manual toothbrush and 1 In your group discuss an electric toothbrush. whether you would prefer to use a manual toothbrush or an electric toothbrush. Explain why.
Working as a pair you have 10 minutes to list as many
appliances as you can that can be both electrical and manual (does not use electricity). Share your ideas to help build a class list.
