Scenario: Paul, the head of the design division company, was tasked by his boss…

Answer: Design Conditions

Defend your answer.

It is under design conditions because Paul selected materials that can accomplish the envisioned
aesthetic performance of the lobby, a glass supported with structural steel so that light can enter the
room. It is also the preference of the client.

Scenario: Chrysler, the division head for design and development of a company, was asked by her…

Answer: Strength to Dimension to Weight Ratio.

Defend your answer.

The decision is under the Strength to Dimension to Weight Ratio criteria. Chrysler wants to
compromise by using steel instead of RC since steel has a smaller section compared to concrete with the
same strength.

Scenario: Aira, now the team leader for the multi storey project, is pressured…

Answer: Duration of Construction period.

Defend your answer.

For the project to finish ahead of time, Aira suggested to use pre-made materials so that its
installation and erection on-site will take less time compared to traditional construction.

Scenario: Jemmel, a pioneer in minimalist engineering, was requested…

Answer: Design Conditions

Defend your answer.

It is under design conditions since Jemmel’s friend wants a low floor to floor distance between
the ground floor and second floor. Jemmel suggested to use steel decking to meet the client’s
preference.

Scenario: A client approached Likha, a well known professional…

Answer: Cost of production and construction.

Defend your answer.

To minimize the cost, likha suggested materials that have high initial cost but low maintenance
cost. This high initial cost maybe because of cost of production of material. This materials are pre-
treated or processed so that it will not require high maintenance.

Shallow foundation is a type of foundation situated near the earth’ surface and usually uses footing and
is constructed on good load-bearing soils. It is used when the upper half of the structure can support its
weight itself. Deep foundation is founded deep on the earth’s surface and uses piers that are driven or
drilled and is constructed when the soil near ground surface does not have a good load-bearing capacity.

Floors normally have joists where floor boards are installed making it joisted and it can also be solid
where the support, reinforced concrete, serves as an envelope at the same time. Wall system uses studs
making it joisted and it can also be a solid where it uses RC or masonry units as supports which also act
as the envelope itself. Ceiling system also uses joists where boards are installed it can be solid however
it is integral to the floor system. Roof systems uses rafters, purlins, and joist where the roofing material
is installed. It can be solid but is part of the floor system at the same time.

Post and Lintel, a simple construction method where beams are supported by columns. It offers free
movement in all directions. It carries concentrated loads, heavy weighted and used on majority of
materials. Second is walled frame which consists of two load-bearing walls where envelope systemc can
be placed above. It carries distributed load and offers limited movement inside it. The third one is
trussed frame that uses the geometric rigidty of triangles to create a built-up structural frame which
consists of chords and members. Trussed frame has a light weight compared to the other two.
