A food chain is a network of links in a food web. Here, the producers are consumed by the
predators-primary and secondary consumers and then the detritivores and finally by
decomposers. The above food chain has 6 different links. Grass is the producer and food of
the grasshopper. Grasshoppers are primary consumer and food for bluebirds. The blue bird is
sencondary consumer in the snake's chain and food. Owls are apex predator and eat the
snakes. When the die, fungi breaks the bodies down and turnes into nutrients. The nutrients,
along with sun and water cause the grass to grow. Organisms that can synthesize their own
food and usually serve as the foundation for all food chains.
A diagram that shows the relative amounts of energy located within each trophic level.
Energy is transferred between trophic levels when one organism eats another and gets the
energy-rich molecules from its prey's body. Most of the energy in an energy pyramid is used
or lost as heat energy as it moves up the pyramid, therefore each level in an energy pyramid
has less energy available to it than the level below (only about 10% of the energy produced at
each level is available to the one above it). Producers are the foundation of all pyramids. The
feces and uneaten, dead organisms become food for decomposers, who metabolize them and
convert their energy to heat through cellular respiration. So, none of the energy actually
disappears – it all winds up as heat in the end.
An organelle is a tiny cellular structure that performs specific functions within a cell. You
can think of organelles as a cell’s internal organs. For example, the nucleus is the cell’s brain,
and the mitochondria are the cell’s hearts. Organelles are often enclosed by their own
membranes, which divide the cell into many small compartments for different biochemical
reactions. Organelles have a wide range of responsibilities, from generating energy for a cell
to controlling its growth and reproduction. From this point of view, you can also think of
organelles as different teams within the factory. Each team carries out its specific task and
coordinates to make sure the entire factory works smoothly.
H
abitat can be defined as the natural home or environment of an animal, plant, or other
organism. The air is very hot and dry. Many plant have thick leave in the desert to retain
water. Tropical rainforest is an enviroment where rain falls almost every day. A forest is an
environment that gets enough rain and warm temperatures for lots of trees to grow. A polar is
an evironmet that is very cold and windy. You might find frogs, ducks, beavers, turtles,
dragonfiles, and many kinds of fish in a wetlands habitat. Savannah habitats characterized by
a combination of widely spaced grassy fields and woodlands where sufficient light reaches
the ground. Continue.
The cell cycle is composed of the interphase, mitotic phase, and the G0 phase. Interphase is
the longest phase in the cell cycle of a typical cell. Athough interphase used to be called the
resting phase, it is actually a very active period. During interphase, cells carry on all their
usual functions, such as respiration and enzyme production. Cell also grow and develop into
mature functioning cell while in interphase. Interphase includes G1 phase, S phase and G2
phase. Mitotic cell, disvision and cytokinesis following interphase, cell disvision occurs in
two main steps. The first step is called mitosis and the second step is called cytokinesis.
Mitosis is that step in the cell cycle where the newly formed DNA is separated and two new
cells are formed with the same number and kind of chromosomes as the parent nucleus.
Cytokinesis is the process by which a cell divides its cytoplasm to produce two daughter
cells.
A visible structure in most stained cells is the large, round nucles. The cell nucleus is a
membrane-bound structure that contains the cell’s hereditary information and controls the
cell’s growth and reproduction. As the nucleus regulates the integrity of genes and gene
expression, it is also referred to as the control center of a cell. The nucleus is surrounded by a
double layered membrane called the nuclear envelope. The nucleus contains DNA, the
hereditary material of cells. Usually, the DNA is in the form of a long, thin strand called
chormatin. Most nuclei contain at least one nucleolus. The nucleoli make ribosomes, which
in turn build proteins. The nucleolus appears as a darker region within the nucleus.
The fluid that fills up the cells is referred to as the cytoplasm. It encompasses the cytosol
with filaments, ions, proteins, and macromolecular structures and also other organelles
suspended in the cytosol. The jelly-like fluid of the cytoplasm is composed of salt and water
and is present within the membrane of the cells and embeds all the parts of the cells and
organelles. The cytoplasm is the fluid content inside the plasma membrance. It also contains
many specialised cell organelles. Each of these organelles performs a specific function for
the cell. Most cellular activities happen in the cytoplasm. It home to many activities of the
cell as it contains molecules, enzymes that are crucial in the break-down of the waste.
The DNA structure can be thought of like a twisted ladder. This structure is described as a
double-helix, as illustrated in the figure above. It is a nucleic acid, and all nucleic acids are
made up of nucleotides. The DNA molecule is composed of units called nucleotides, and
each nucleotide is composed of three different components, such as sugar, phosphate groups
and nitrogen bases. The basic building blocks of DNA are nucleotides, which are composed
of a sugar group, a phosphate group, and a nitrogen base. The sugar and phosphate groups
link the nucleotides together to form each strand of DNA. Adenine (A), Thymine (T),
Guanine (G) and Cytosine (C) are four types of nitrogen bases. These 4 Nitrogenous bases
pair together in the following way: A with T, and C with G. Among the three components of
DNA structure, sugar is the one which forms the backbone of the DNA molecule. It is also
called deoxyribose. The nitrogenous bases of the opposite strands form hydrogen bonds,
forming a ladder-like structure.
Mitochondria and chloroplasts likely evolved from engulfed prokaryotes that once lived as
independent organisms. At some point, a eukaryotic cell engulfed an aerobic prokaryote,
which then formed an endosymbiotic relationship with the host eukaryote, gradually
developing into a mitochondrion. Eukaryotic cells containing mitochondria then engulfed
photosynthetic prokaryotes, which evolved to become specialized chloroplast organelles. The
endosymbiotic hypothesis for the origin of mitochondria (and chloroplasts) suggests that
mitochondria are descended from specialized bacteria (probably purple nonsulfur bacteria)
that somehow survived endocytosis by another species of prokaryote or some other cell type,
and became incorporated into the cytoplasm.
During the process of cell divisions, a molecule of DNA is resourceful for self-duplication.
The process commences when two chains present in the parent DNA unwind. With the
separation of the two strands, each strand serves as a master copy to build a new partner
which is performed by getting in place appropriate nucleotides and linking it. As the bases
should be linked in a particular pattern (guanine to cytosine and adenine to thymine), each of
the newly constructed strands is not identical but complementary to the older one.
Consequently, at the end of replication, two molecules of DNA are produced, each one
identical to the original. The new molecule is a double helix having one old strand and one
new strand to be passed to the daughter cells. DNA replication results in the duplication of
DNA content in the cell, which is essential to maintain genetic continuity in the newly
formed cell during cell division. Each cell receives the exact copy of DNA as a parent cell.
This is required for growth and maintenance.
