Much to our amazement, ‘Dinosaur footprints’ succeeded where every other alde-memoire had falledt So | started using scale end arpeggio maps regularly with all my Grade 1 and 2 pupils. The improvised ‘dinosaur rhythm games’ were added so that we could stay on each pitch long enough to be able to improve intonation. As each scale became reasonably secure, we tried a piece in the same key. These pieces were also useful after exams to make sure scales and keys weren't forgotten straight away! Composing short ‘dinosaur’ tunes was another popular activity - even the most faint-hearted tackled this quite happily when they realised how easy it was if they just used the notes of the arpeggio. These compositions proved to have a secondary use - they were very handy for adding to Dinosaur projects at schoo! and impressing class teachers! Have fun with your own pupils following in the footsteps of the scaley monsters - and add your ‘own games too, Examination boards usually ask for scales to be prepared with either slurred or separate bows. Practise both!
