Abstract of the English translation System theory is the result of the
symbiosis between applied mathematics and system science and systems
engineering. Its origins, as a mathematical theory, lie in the theory of electric circuits, electronics and telecommunication, and especially in automatic control theory. It is commonly known that automatic control, through inter- trans- and multidisciplinary vision and by using mathematical language, is a matrix of the systems theory. The systems theory starts from the concept that a system is a complex of elements in interaction. It is highlighted by its internal structure and connections, which is a relatively unified entity relative to the environment. The behaviour of a system depends not only on the properties of its elements, but rather on the interactions between them. Similar ideas and concepts, emerging simultaneously and relatively autonomous in various scientific fields, have led to the concept of systems, to the formulation of laws governing them, and to the discovery of the isomorphisms between the various systems existing in nature. The purpose of this book is to present, in a rigorous and accessible way, the basic knowledge of the mathematical theory of systems usable in the field of engineering and in particular in automatic control. The results are included in six chapters, which deal with the following areas: mathematical description of linear dynamic systems and input – output transfer, controllability and observability of linear dynamic systems, stability of linear dynamic systems, stability of multivariable linear automatic control systems, nonlinear dynamic systems, and optimal control of dynamic systems. The presentation of these results is both systemic and theoretic by the mathematical approach appropriate to the achievement of rigorous and applicative general solutions through examples disseminated throughout the book. According to the purpose of the book, the problems are addressed in a synthetic way, the treatment being structured on definitions, theorems (mostly proved), solved examples and, as the case may be, remarks. The first chapter, entitled „Mathematical models of linear dynamic systems”, begins with an introductory subchapter dedicated to terminology, the subject of systems theory and the characterization of the system concept with nuances related to continuity in time, causality, dynamics, linearity and time invariance. Then the basic knowledge of time invariant linear dynamical systems is presented with reference to subchapters: state representation (algebraic structure of transition matrix, modal structure of transition matrix), input – state – output transfer (complete response, forced response, decoupled transfer, resonance transfer, blocked transfer), input – output transfer (transfer matrix, Smith-McMillan form of transfer matrix, Smith form of numerator matrix, pole and transmission zero polynomials), matrix fractions (usual forms, poles and transmission zeros), polynomial representation (definitions, equivalent transforms, poles and decoupling zeros, zeros of the system matrix). In the second chapter, entitled „Controllability and observability of linear dynamic systems”, the first subchapter is dedicated to the definition characterization of state controllability and controllability degree, to state observability and observability degree, and to relationships with decoupling zeros. On this basis we study the structure of the state space (completely controllable subspace, unobservable subspace and Kalman canonical decomposition), and controllable and observable canonical forms respectively. In the second subchapter, starting from the polynomial representation, the controllability of the partial state and the observability of the partial state are analysed. The third subchapter deals with the problems of the output functional controllability, the input functional observability and with their connections to the inverses of the transfer matrix. The object of the last subchapter is to obtain a realisation (i.e. a state representations) for a given transfer matrix and then minimal realisations, balanced realisations and reduced realisations. In the third chapter, entitled „Stability and stabilisation of linear dynamic systems”, the first two subchapters are dedicated to the characterization of the internal stability (of equilibrium state), the external stability (in the sense of the bounded input – bounded output) and the relations between them in the case of the dynamic linear time invariant systems. In the third subchapter there are presented polynomial stability criteria (applicable both in case of internal stability and external stability), with appropriate extensions for the case of the interval polynomials and the determination of the parametric domains of stability. The subject of the fourth subchapter is the problem of stabilizing linear time invariant linear systems. The solutions examined are based on the use of state feedback (pole allocation and state stabilisation), output feedback and asymptotic state observer (identity type observer, minimum order observer, and stabilization by observed state feedback). Chapter fourth, entitled „Multivariable linear feedback control systems”, has as its main object the analysis of the stability of this class of automatic control systems and the generalization of the Nyquist criterion. In the first subchapter, starting from the mathematical description, a series of stability results based on the Hsu- Chen lemma are proved. Then, in the second subchapter, the characteristic transfer functions and the characteristic transfer loci are introduced, the principle of the argument is applied and several variants of the generalized Nyquist criterion applicable to multivariable linear automatic control systems are stated and proved. In the third subchapter, taking into account the hypothesis of the diagonal dominance in the frequency domain, it is proved that some sufficient stability criteria for multivariable linear automatic control systems are proved. In the fifth chapter, entitled „Nonlinear dynamic systems”, after a short introductive subchapter, in subchapters two and three two methods of the (qualitative) study of the stability of nonlinear dynamic systems are presented. The first is the state plan method where state portrait is introduced and then second-order linear dynamic systems and second-order nonlinear dynamic systems are studied (by equivalent quality systems, use of linearized systems, of limit cycles, and an application of ideal relay non-linearity). The second is the direct Lyapunov method, in which the results of stability, asymptotic stability and the use of the linear approximation are presented. On this basis, in the third subchapter, the problem of the existence and construction of a Liapunov function and the possibilities of determining the stability domains are studied. Subsequently, in the fourth subchapter, the problem of stability of multivariable nonlinear automatic control systems based on the use of the concepts of hyperstability and asymptotic hyperstability are addressed. In this context, there is presented a synthesizing method of an asymptotically hyperstable autoadaptive systems. The last subchapter is dedicated to the flow invariance method in the qualitative study of nonlinear dynamic systems. Based on the sub-tangency condition, the constrained evolution of the dynamic systems, the componentwise constrained evolution, the componentwise asymptotic stability, the componentwise asymptotically exponential stability and the componentwise absolute stability are defined and characterized. The applications refer to componentwise state detection and stabilization and to sliding mode control synthesis (sliding conditions, flow structure induced by sliding mode, touching process as ideal flow precursor of sliding mode and sliding mode control of a disturbed linear dynamic system). The sixth chapter, entitled „Optimal control of dynamic systems”, begins with an introductory subchapter presenting the general aspects of the optimal control of dynamic systems (with examples of the usual quality indices) and defining the general forms of the quality indices. Subsequently, in the second subchapter are proved the fundamental results from the theory of variational calculus (a necessary condition of extremum and a fundamental lemma of variational calculus). On this basis, in the third subchapter, starting from the mathematical formulation of the optimal control problem, the synthesis of the optimal control is solved and the Hamilton equations are obtained, accompanied, as the case may be, by the conditions at the limits appropriate to the type of approached problem (fixed or free horizon, free or fixed final state; final state on a curve or on a surface). In addition punctual or global links are considered. In the fourth subchapter, the results already obtained are applied to linear dynamic systems, thus obtaining the Riccati differential equation and the Riccati algebraic equation. The last two subchapters are dedicated to the problem of optimal control with constraints. In this respect, the principle of the minimum (Pontryagin) is first introduced with the generalization of the necessary extremum condition and followed by the illustration of its application in the case of the minimum time problem. Next it is the method of dynamic programming with the formulation of optimality principle (Bellman) and its application for the proving of discrete form of dynamic programming. At the final of the book six annexes summarize the notions of normed vector spaces, polynomial matrices, quadratic forms and Hermitian forms, calculating the eigenvalues of the frequency response matrix, a Schur formula for partitioned matrices, and argument principle. According to the purpose of the book, the addressed problems are illustrated by solved examples. All these, like mathematical relations, are numbered with two Arabic numbers: the first indicates the subchapter and the second the number of the order within the subchapter. The meaning of the symbols and abbreviations used is shown at the end of the book. For the fluency of exposure, bibliographic references are only used if strictly necessary. At the same time, the bibliographic list comprises a general part and five divisions by domains: linear systems, multivariable linear automatic control systems, nonlinear automatic control systems, flow invariance method and optimal control. The sixth division comprises some bibliographic titles published in the interval 2008 – 2018 by the collective of authors working in Iași. Through the conception and the range of issues, the book is addressed to specialists in automatic control, computer science, electrical engineering, electronics, as well as in process informatics and applied mathematics working in education and research, design and industry. At the same time, the book opens to the students in the above mentioned fields the path to advanced automatic control theory knowledge that makes possible theoretical synthesis and effective practical solutions based on the products offered by information science and technology.
