TYPHOON NINA SPOILED CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY

The powerful typhoon threatened to brought heavy rainfall and destructive winds and so many families
were forced to spend their Christmas in a crowded and powerless emergency shelters.

Nock – ten locally known as typhoon Nina, strongly strike the Bicol Region. Packing a maximum
sustained wind of 185 kilometre per hour with a gust up to 225 kilometre per hour when it made its
landfall over Catanduanes province, which was under the highest storm alert on Sunday evening,
Christmas Day, December 25, 2016.

Said to be one of the strongest typhoon that hits the Bicol Region, it leaves a massive damage not only in
Catanduanes but also in the outlying provinces. The typhoon brought injuries and even killed people.
Cut power to five entire provinces due to toppled electric posts, trees, and knocked down
communication. Heavy to intense pouring of rain and severe blowing of strong winds caused flash
floods, wrecked the houses, bridges and other infrastructures. Cancelled, delayed or re – scheduled
flights and ferries were barred from sailing, stranding holiday travellers.

Early morning on Tuesday, December 27, 2016, all storms signal have been lifted as Typhoon Nina
transverses the West Philippine Sea and exit the Philippine area of Responsibility Tuesday evening.
