 Theology views freedom as living a life free from sin and living according

to God’s will.
 Philosophers define freedom as being based on freewill, the capacity of
persons to choose their own actions and decisions. The exercise of freewill
should be based on sound judgment and rational thinking.
 Freedom is the liberty to make choices in life. Philosophers relate freedom
to the concept of human agency, which refers to the capacity of a person
to act and exert control over his own behavior.

Human freedom is expressed in 2 ways:

1. Free will is the capacity to choose from alternative courses of action or
decision.
2. Free action is the freedom to perform an action without any obstacle or
hindrances.

 Human Acts are voluntary actions, where the individual has motive and full
knowledge of the action.
 Acts of man are involuntary actions. These are actions that occur naturally
in the human being.
 Philosophers identify various ways that people can exercise free will and
free action. These perspectives emphasize different views regarding the
nature of free will and how it influences human action.
 Faculties model refers to free will as the use of our mental faculties. It
assumes that we have free will due to our intellect because each human
action is based on rationality and sound judgment.
 Hierarchical model argues that human free will is based on human wants
and desires.
 Reasons-Responsive view believes that man has free will because he is
able to entertain reasons not to enact a certain decision and act upon them
when the need arises.
Human Freedom has its constraints. CONSTRAINTS on free action include:
1. External constraints such as prohibitions, laws and other social controls
imposed by society, disability, sickness or coercion exerted by another
person, weather, accidents, or poverty.
2. Internal constraints on free will include, manipulation, brain washing and
coercion.

 It is possible for people to exercise their free will but are prevented to
engage in free action.
 It is also possible for a person to act without free will, regarding his
actions.
 Free Will is often contrasted with DETERMINISM, is a philosophical view
which believes that every event in the world are already determined by
outside forces or brought about by underlying factors.
